Module Objectives

In this module, you will:

  • Reflect on your family’s history of communicating with teachers and school staff
  • Brainstorm ways to communicate with families who have infants that foster engagement and build partnership\
  • Analyze negotiating with families

Activity #1: Reflecting on Keeping in Touch with Families

Go to Flip Grid (https://flipgrid.com/7383d365 your username is your first name as it appears on CUNY First) then reflect on and answer the following questions:

  1. What are the methods that your teachers (pre-K to high school) and school staff used to communicate with your family?
  2. Which methods that your teachers used to communicate with your family were most effective? Why?
  3. Which methods that your teacher used to communicate with your family were least effective? Why?
  4. Did you teachers negotiate educational decisions (what was best for your education) with your family?
    1. If yes, give an example of a negotiation that took place between 1 of your teachers and family.
    2. If no, why do you think your teachers did not negotiate with your family about what was best for your education?

Watch TAPS: Partnership with Families Part 4 (2012); complete this handout as you watch the video

After reading Keyser (2017) and watching TAPS: Partnership with Families Part 4, answer the questions below, using evidence from both the reading and video:

  1. How should infant teachers communicate with families with infants to engage and build partnerships with the families? Why?
  2. What is Rukmini negotiating with the family about? What is the resolution of the negotiation?
  3. How is the negotiation Rukmini had with the family similar to negotiations your family had with your teachers/ school staff? How is it different?
  4. Is negotiation important when working with families of infants? Why?

Activity #3: Group Zine Project

Continue working on your Group Zine Project for this module.  What should you do?

    1.  Go to your group’s Google folder (I emailed you the link)
    2. Look for the document titled “Module 8”
    3. Based on your assigned color, identify your role on the ‘Module 8″ document
    4. Complete the task assigned to your role
