  1. Brainstorm how infant teachers can support a baby’s (0-18 months old) cognitive development
  2. Continue to develop your Play materials zine
  3. Write an Observation of an Infant Paper that is objective and detailed

Assignment #1: Overview of Infant Cognitive Development

Watch the Infants: Cognitive Development (2010, Learning Seed) video.  The video is housed in the BLCC library Kanopy video database.  Follow these directions or use this video to access the video.   Complete this handout as you watch the video.

Watch Discoveries in Infancy: Cognitive Development & Learning (Far West Labratory, 1991). Complete this handout while watching the video.

Review this PowerPoint I narrate the Power Point in this video

Read Peterson (2012). Complete this handout as you read the article.

Answer the questions below:

Your best friend heard about a new flash card program that claims to improve baby’s cognitive development. The flash card system is expensive and the program requires her to spend 1 hour a day reviewing flash cards with her baby. Use information from the videos and readings to answer the questions below:

  1. Should your friend purchase and use the flash card system? Why?
  2. Using information from the videos, reading and Power Point, what are important cognitive skills babies 0 to 18 months to develop?
  3. How can infant teachers support babies’ cognitive development? List practices that no one has mentioned yet.

Assignment #2: Observation of an Infant Paper

In module 8, you observed an infant.  Now it’s time to write your observation of an infant paper.  Below are resources that should help you write your paper.

Assignment #3: Play Materials Zine

What should you do this week?

  1. Communicate with your group! Let me know if you are having trouble reaching any group member(s).
  2. Identify your play material. See Module 4 Assignment 3 for a list of play materials. Pick 1 to focus on – that is the 1st step!
  3. What is your assigned color is (I sent it in an email)?
  4. Go to your group’s Google folder, to the Google Doc for Module 9.
  5. What is your role for the week (based on your color)?
  6. Add material to the Google Doc for Modules 9 based on your assigned color/ role.
  7. Our audience is infant teachers who are working in the field –what you can share with them (from the articles, videos, etc. that will be helpful). They already know general info – they need specifics (quotes, concepts, details, etc. from the videos & reading) to support their work!
  8. Go back to Modules 5-8 and add material to the Google Doc based on your role.
  9. Check to see if you can access Flipsnack; this video reviews how to access Flipsnack.
  10. Next week we will start the process of writing your zine article!

Assignment #4: Self-Assessment

At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 209 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).

  • What did you learn in this module?

    • Insights (connections you made or “ah-ha’s” you had about the material)
  • How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with infants?
