2.What did your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) do to involve your family in your education?

Reflect on and answer the questions below:
1. How was your family involved in your education in pre-k through high school?
2. What did your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) do to involve your family in your education?
3. What barriers or obstacles prevented your family from being more involved in your education?
4. What could your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) have done to facilitate your family’s involvement in your education?
1. Answer: My family was involved in my education by always being proactive and participating in my school activities such as PTA meetings, school dances, parent teacher conferences, etc.
2. Answer: My teachers made sure to always stay in contact with my family. Doesn’t matter if it was good or bad my teachers made sure to always aware my family and always suggested what will work for me and not work for me.
3. Answer: My father being incarcerated kind of had a big effect on him not being around so much but once he was released he was super involved in my education and still is even me attending college he makes sure I’m on top of things.
4. Answer: Nothing really, I did wish my mom had someone to talk to or could relate to what she was going through. Raising a child while your partner is away could be stressful and she didn’t have anyone that related to her at that time. But other then that everything was really good with my education and school and with teachers
1. How was your family involved in your education in pre-k through high school?
-My parents were not involved much in school, and they were pretty much my only family, so I didn’t have anyone else to rely on attending things. The only times that I remember them being active in school events were my graduations, the occasional class parties, and sometimes field trips, which was always very exciting.
2. What did your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) do to involve your family in your education?
-I remember my teachers would throw gatherings, like class parties with parents. This one time in kindergarten, my class did a cultural celebration theme event, where we each brought food from our country and I think I told my dad to buy the most delicious thing so I can show off. It was a good moment for parents to get to know each other well as well as the teachers. My teachers always came up with ways to get parents involved, and I think it was great.
3. What barriers or obstacles prevented your family from being more involved in your education?
-It was really just their busy schedules, they each had a full-time job to worry about. But they did the best that they could. One of them always tried to be there.
4. What could your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) have done to facilitate your family’s involvement in your education?
-I think my school really couldn’t do much with facilitating their involvement. It was more of a personal issue. But what my school did, with hosting and offering classroom gatherings, was very nice and it was a great idea for everyone to spend time and get to know each other over food.
1)
How was your family involved in your education in pre-k through high school? During my early years of school when I was starting in Pre-k, I struggled with departing from my mother at drop off time. I would cry every single day to the point my mother grew so depressed where she decided to take me out. Social workers at school explained to her that pre-k was recommended but not mandatory but that she should take the time to prepare me for kindergarten. When I graduated from 6th grade in my elementary school, going into middle/highschool was another wreck for me. I knew the environment was different. My mom took the bus for the first few weeks but I remember when she told me that I was bigger now and I could start walking myself to school. She taught me how to take the bus a few times with her along. When the time came that it was the time for me to start traveling on my own. I remember crying. She explained to me that she would take the bus with me but she would no longer get off with me. As I walked myself to the school from getting off the bus, the transition was getting easier day by day. Before I knew it I was able to feel comfortable to the point I told her she no longer needed to attend me on my school travels.
2) What did your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) do to involve your family in your education? During my kindergarten years my teacher highly suggested that my mom participate in transitioning in class with me. My mom stood in class with me for a total of 2 weeks. She would have breakfast with me and my teachers made some changes to the class schedule to better support me. After lunch they would launch read aloud but because I was a new student who had a history of detaching to my mother, the teacher decided to have play time after breakfast. My mom would then assist me to the play area. This helped a lot to ease me out and eventually I adapted within a few weeks where it made some huge change in my development.
3) What barriers or obstacles prevented your family from being more involved in your education? During first grade my teacher was concerned about my speech. I was the quiet little girl who always chose to sit in the back. A meeting was called for my mother to come up to the school to try and give consent to get me evaluated for speech class. My mother felt discriminated against. Shfe felt as if the school was being team supportive and continued to go against her words and instead continue to push the evaluation. My work was always done on time and I understood the concept of any subject that was being taught. I was able to reflect on these subjects but because I was quiet they worried about my participation in class. My mom was upset and she denied the evaluation but the school continued to push until she gave up and gave the permission to run the test. After a couple of sessions to determine if I had a speech problem, they came to a conclusion that I was just an introvert. I was actually very brilliant. I was just too shy to participate.
4) What could your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) have done to facilitate your family’s involvement in your education? What they should have done was respect my mother’s words when she advised them and told them that I was just a quiet girl. My mom mentioned how I always got home and the first thing I did was complete my home and spent my whole afternoon reading, even during dinner and before bed. She informed them she was willing to sit in class with me to see what was going on but they continued to tell her that at the stage I was in I had to accept that my mother could no longer run to my rescue to try and get words out of me but instead I had to learn how to speak up in class for a participation grade. This is why my mother felt discriminated against because part of a kids development was creating relationships with parents and teachers whenever the child needed the support.
1:How was your family involved in your education in pre-k through high school?
My mom was not really the parent who was enrolled in the PTA meetings or the mom who would go on field trips. But she was really involved in me completing my homework assignments and making sure I was not being disrespectful in any type of way to any of my teachers. My mom would also tell me ” I better not get any complaints from you talking a lot or that you not completing your homework Patricia”. I remember when it came to me receiving my IEP meetings my mom was always in the meetings and make sure she heard what the teachers goal were for me.
2:What did your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) do to involve your family in your education?
The teachers had bake sale and family nights were was a time for the teachers to meet the parents and go over the children’s work. Some of the teachers will send newsletter and will ask parents when dropping off if they any question and for those parents who were not comfortable some of my teachers had a question box in the back of the room.
3:What barriers or obstacles prevented your family from being more involved in your education?
I believe my mom was not more involved as I would love because of language barrier. At the time my mom did not understand as much English like how she understands now. So at times I had to be her translator and at times I would sugar coat things.
4:What could your teachers and school staff (pre-K through high school) have done to facilitate your family’s involvement in your education?
I think my teachers should have said more positive things about me. Almost everything that was said about me was about me talking a lot or my homework not being completed and how my reading skills were behind age appropriate level. I believe if they started with positive it would have change my aspect to completing homework and actually improving in my academic skills.
1) I don’t remembered much from my childhood, but from pre-k through middle school I have always been the kids who was to themselves. My mother and father were always there for parent teacher conferences, getting feedback from the teachers were always positive on how I always do my work and get high grades on test, but never participated. My parents only involved themselves with my school work or homework to make sure that Im doing what Im suppose to be doing.

3) The barriers and obstacles that prevented my parents from being involved in my education was work. With my mother being pregnant, my mother had one job, but long hours where my dad had two jobs and would get home late at night and be gone in the mornings.
4) I believe that the teachers tried their best to have my parents involve in my education at school, but they also knew about my family situation because of the parent teacher meetings. My teacher left voicemails and emails for my parents to read as to not bother them at work.

The only thing staff can do is call parents and send letters to communicate anything they need to for parents who can’t always be there. Also update websites of anything that is important.
