  1. 1. In my option I do not think it is professional to eat in front while they are eating because it doesn’t look good. It is something different if there is a party and the parents are also there but on a regular day I think its better to eat during your lunch break.
    2. I think that its okay to set up in the morning for the activity if there is only about 2 to three children. If there is any more than that then the teacher will be too distracted prepping the activity then paying attention to the children.
    3. I di not think it is professional to finish a child’s art project even if they ask because its not going to help the child in the end. The child wont learn responsibility and if you do it more then once the child might get used to it.
    4. I think that its in between to ask a family to help with an activity because it depends on the situation. If its a holiday then you can encourage the parents to do it with their children. If its a regular day and your falling behind I don’t think it would look professional.
    5. I think it is professional to give your boss a weeks notice if your going to quit so they can look for someone else to replace you.

    6. You believe children learn through play and hands-on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.
in a situation like this I would inform the family that I would help the child to avoid him getting dirty or to provide him with extra clothes.

. Your co-worker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives
I would ask my co worker if everything is ok and if they would like to switch times.

A group of families met to your director saying they want their children to be taught more academic skills. Based on that meeting your director decided that the 3- and 4-year-olds work on worksheets during center time each morning.
I would ask the director if I can do something where the children are more engaged learning rather then a worksheet.

    1. For question #1 there are some schools that want you to eat with the children to encourage them to try new things. I agree that teachers shouldn’t be eating their own lunch but what about eating what the children are eating?

    2. hey emily,
good job because I understood your solutions and your responses but if you added examples for the reading and were more detailed you would have a stonger agruement so that you can change those who don’t agree with you minds.

    3. Hey Emily, I have to agree with your answer for number 4. I didn’t see anything wrong with asking for help from family especially when you ask them in a way that is more like asking them to engage in the classroom. But I do understand and agree with your explanation.

  2. 1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
No. It’s not professional in my option because there could be an emergency with a child while your eating and that could cause a delay in you rushing to help the child. The child could be allergic to what you’re eating.

    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
Yes. It’s professional, I don’t see a problem with that, you could have a late start, so it’s not done by the children starting to arrive. The children could help out, that would show development involvement and also independent.

    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
No. It’s not professional because a child has to learn how to do their own work from a young age.

    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
Yes. It’s professional because there is a lot of family member who are very active and involved in their child school activity.

    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
No. It’s not professional, because you’re suppose to give at least two weeks notice, that way they could find someone to fill your slot.
    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1. Which stations did you pick?
    Situations 1, 3 and 4
    2. How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?
    1. Andrea, the mother of a 4 year old Zachary asks you not to let Zachary to nap in the afternoon. Andrea says the nap causes Zachary to stay up too late, and she can’t get him up in the morning time. Zachary usually sleeps soundly for one hour every day and seems to need the sleep to be able to enjoy class activities and get along with other children in the afternoon.
I would explain to Zachary mother that I think it’s best for Zachary to take the hour nap, because with the nap he gets along with perfect with other kids and without the nap there is always an issue with him.

    3. You believe children learn through play and hands on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.
I would ask the parent to get the child an apron that way their clothes wouldn’t get messy.

    4. Your coworker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives.
I would ask my coworker if everything is okay with her at home, I would suggest to her to take a later shift with since she’s always late.

  3. 1. Is it professional to eat in front the children while they are eating?
I think its not professional because during there eating time you should be taking a good look at them god forbid for someone to be choking and having full focus on there eating is important, When its your break or lunch time that should be you main focus on eating.

    2. Is it professional to set up morning activities as children are entering classroom?
I think is not professional, Because one your suppose to arrive to work a hour before and get everything set up so you and the children can be in a safe place accidents can happen. But in so cases late starts happen.

    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child ask you to?
I think its not professional because, ALL children needs to try and be treated equally.

    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with a activity/lesson you are leading?
I think its professional to ask a family member to help you with children activities that shows you and children family interest in there childs learning and makes it fun and interesting

    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week notice if you decide to quit?
I think its not professional because you and your boss suppose to have conversations weeks upon weeks on whats going on and the reason why so everything can have a set date.

    6. Pick 3 ethical dilemmas
I chose to look at situations 3,4,1
I the mother of zachary askes you not to let him nap in the afternoon because he stays up late. I would respect orders but find a better solution for both child sleeping schedule and mother orders.

I think children learn to play with there hands. Which leads to messy playing and a new member joins the school says they do not want there children clothes dirty. I would see if parents can take children or sit child aside or ask parents of extra clothing.

your co worker is consistently late which then leads you to being with children alone.. What are my next steps? speaking to my co worker if nothing changes boss gets involved

    1. Hi Delesah. In regards to your response for question 3, I think there’s ways into manipulating the situation and helping the child instead of finishing. I don’t see it as being unprofessional neither do I see it being professional because you can help the child finish it. Maybe the child needs that extra attention or extra motivation. I don’t agree doing it all of the time and getting the child in that habit, but the situation can be handled different ways.

    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1. Which stations did you pick?
    2. How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?

    1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?

Answer: Its not professional to eating front of children because you’re not fully focused on them. I feel when working with children your should be focused on them if you’re eating you’re not paying too much attention.

    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?

Answer: It’s not professional to set up morning actives in the classroom as the children are arriving because I personal feel it should already be done. So as a teacher you can get straight into the activity you have palled with your children. Being late , not being on point is not a good look as a teacher in my opinion. We all do have our late days which is fine but just wouldn’t want it an everyday habit.

    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?

Answer: It’s not professional to finish a Childs art project if the child asks you to because they’re not really learning. If they don’t complete it on their own how is the children really learning even if it may take more time then the rest its fine , teaching children to go at their pace is the most important thing. Make them feel comfortable.

    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?

Answer: t’s not professional to ask a family to help with an activity/lesson that I am leading because its not their job to. If I make a lesson I don’t expect the parent to know what I’m treating, I need to be able to teach and connect with my children.

    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?

Answer: Its not professional to give my boss a weeks notice if I plan to quit because that’s too short. I feel a 2 week notice is way better and much more professional.

    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1. Which stations did you pick?
    2. How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?

    Answer:
    1. 4, 7, 3
    2. 4) I would speak with my co-worker one on one about the lateness, ask her/him why he/she is late is it a family situation and ask her how we can resolve this.
    7) I would speak with the new director letting him/her know the NYC Dept of Health Bureau new enrollment rule for families.
    3) I would let the family members know what is it going on. Always suggestion to pack the student a extra clothes for their son so he can participate in our activies

    1. I believe it is professional to ask families for help in a lesson or activity because it allows parents to be a part of their child’s education. However, I think you should only ask for help if the parents know about the thing you are teaching like if you’re talking about doctors and a parent happens to be a doctor.

  5. 1. I think it isn’t professional. the time the children eat should be just that for the children. we should dedicate that time on them and assist them with anything they may need assistance with. our time should be our Lunch time.
    2. Yes and No, I don’t think its wrong to get a head start on setting up the area, I do think as they arrive you should welcome them and acknowledge them, let them know you are aware of them being present.
    3. No, I think a child should always finish it, its a memory of theirs and you shouldn’t take that away from them. UNLESS they are incapable of doing so…
    4. yes, if its a family event I don’t see why not. we should allow the parents to feel welcomed in participating along with their children.
    5. No, the professional way would be a two week notice, so they are able to find someone within that frame. but if it were for a job, some would allow it.
    6. (4) Your coworker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives: I would pull her to the side and ask if everything is okay at home and express how she is needed during our shift and explain my reasons. Hopefully that would be an effort for her to make a few changes, if not I will eventually bring in our supervisor to speak to her.
    (1) You believe children learn through play and hands on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty: Express to the parents of the child that daily activity consist of different activity that may result in clothes to become dirty, suggest that the child should wear play clothes or the child should bring in a set of old clothing to wear while doing these activities.

    1. Hi Kelly, I can understand why you feel it’s unprofessional to eat when the children are eating because you should want to be able to be hands on with them need be, but at the same time I do believe that it can be professional because you’re showing them that everyone eats during lunch time, and developing camaraderie between the teachers and the classmates. However, it is very important that teachers don’t become too involved in their food and lose focus on the children.

  6. 1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
I believe it is fine to eat in front of the children while they are eating as long as everyone is eating the same thing. Eating in front of the children can encourage them to try new foods.

    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
It is not professional to set up morning activities as the children arrive because you should be in front of the classroom greeting the children and their families as they walk in. You should also be available if the children or families have any questions or need to speak with you. However, if there are multiple teachers in the classroom I think it is okay if one has to finish setting up but it should be quick.

    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
It is not professional to finish a child’s art project if they ask. If you finish the project for them they will continue to ask you and not do the work themselves. Instead, you should encourage them to finish or guide them.

    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
I think it is fine to ask a family to help with an activity or lesson if they can offer more insight to the activity/lesson. For example, if you are doing an activity on culture and one of the parents is from another country they can share information on that country’s culture. This also allows families to be a part of their child’s education.

    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
I do not think it’s professional to give your boss a week’s notice because that is not enough time for them to interview and hire a new staff member.

    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    Which stations did you pick?
How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?

    1. You believe children learn through play and hands-on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.
I would talk to the mother about how important play is for her child’s growth and development. I would also suggest that she uses older clothes for the child to come to school with. I would also see if I am able to provide smocks for the children during certain activities to prevent the children from getting their clothes dirty.

    2. Your co-worker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives.
I would speak with her first and ask if it is possible for her to arrive earlier because a certain amount of teachers per student is required. If she is still unable to do so I would talk to my superior because I would not be able to set up the classroom and check in on all the children and their families on my own. It is not fair to the children and it breaks the rules that keep the children safe.

    3. The NYC Dept of Health Bureau of Day Care regulations state there can be no more than 18 children in your classroom. Your new director is enrolling more than 18 families. Your roster has 21 children full-time students and the director is still recruiting more.
I would either respectfully ask the director to stop recruiting or ask for an assistant teacher because I am not able to have more than 18 children in a classroom. I would explain that it is against the rules and the rules are there to ensure each child is safe and gets the education they deserve.

    1. Hey Kenneth,
Do you think setting up in the morning and having children help you with it can promote them to be more independent and flexible? Also to feels a sense of they can take are of their classroom and feel good by helping out? Or if a kid is having a hard time helping the teacher finish setting up may motivate them relax and feels better.

    2. Hey Kenneth, with #4 I do agree, classroom are very diverse now a days so children be from different countries so it is important to make sure you understand this culture

  7. 1.Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
-I think it depends if its your lunch time as well as the childrens its okay but if its not its unprofessional because children may want what you are eating and you don’t wanna say no or give them something that they be allegric or something their parents don’t want them eating especially because in the code of ethical conduct it states above all we shall not harm children.

2.Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
-Yes its very professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as children arrive in the morning because as a teacher or caregiver you wanna be preapare and have everything ready so everything can go as plan for the rest of day.As the code of ethical conducts states we shall care for and educate children in positive, emotional, and social environments so as long as your doing that and you’re ready as soon as all kids are there to being its totally professional.
3.Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
-No its not professional because your job its to assit and help that child grow and learn so if you have a good relationship with the child they should be okay will you only helping and letting the child finsh there art project on there own and its better if you talk a child through it.
4.Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
-No its not professional the code of ethical responsibilites to families states that we should encourge them to participate in the program but never does it state we can ask its our job to teach and come up with lessons and activity and to be able to that without noones help.
5.Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
-No because you need to give your place time to find your replacement and you have to let the kids know as well you’re leaving, and the ethical responsibilites states if we have any concerns about the program we shall inform the programs higher ups.
    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1.Which stations did you pick?
    -3
    -4
    -10
2.How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?
-for 3 I would ask the family to bring a change of clothes so that I can change the child if the child’s clothes get dirty they won’t go home like that.I will also speak to them about the importance hands on playing and how it helps with building learning skills and I will also build a bond and create trust with the family so they have a change of mind.
-for 4 like the code of responsibilities to co-workers I would speak to my co-worker first about her bahavior and my concerns and I will keep it respectfully and if that doesn’t work I will take to somone with higher power so that we can all find a solution to her lateness and why she is late and what we can do to help her.
-for 10 because my bond with the children’s I will speak to them and let them know they can’t do that again and then I will speak to family and hope they understand and let them know it will never happen again.

  8. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
It is not professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating because we need to take care of the children when they are eating. We need to watch their behavior, what they like to eat and how they eat.
Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
It is not professional because we need to show respect to the children in the classroom. If support is to be setting up, we need to talk to the children before one day.
Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
It is professional because they are not interested in this project. Teacher support connects with the children’s mind what they think and interest.
Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
It is not professional because I have responsibility to lead the activity/ lesson with my opinion. If I ask a family to help, it is not 100 percent my opinion.
Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
It is not professional because it is a job. If I quit, my boss would need a new worker in my position.
    Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    Which stations did you pick?
How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?
    I pick 3,4 and 10
If a new family member says they do not want their son’s clothes dirty, I will explain the play and hand-on learning is very important for the children’s skills and I would ask to bring old clothes. And also, I can promote such as butcher paper to protect the clothes. I heard some of the schools have hygiene for washing the student clothes. It will also be helpful for the children and family who don’t want to dirty their clothes.
If my coworker is constantly late, I would listen to his/her reason why they are constantly late. I would learn the school worker policy. And then, if the reason is incorrect, I will report to the principal of the school.
I would talk to Alia’s and Jose’s parents about that case. And also, I would explain to both families the relationship skill is very important at this age. And I will tell my co-worker to take care more than other children at lunch time.

    1. Yan, do you think that by eating maybe a piece of fruit or some vegetables may help the kids learn how to eat certain foods and promote them to want to make healthy choices?

  9. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
There are different situations where I think it might be unprofessional. If a child is allergic to something you are eating then I definitely think it is unprofessionally to eat it around them even if they are eating. If it happens to be your lunch break at the time the children are eating then I think it is okay. However, if it is a big or heavy meal I don’t think it’s professional anything that may cause the student to ask or beg you for some, maybe just like a sandwich should be okay in my opinion.

Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
I think it is okay to be setting up the morning activities as the children arrive in the morning. I don’t really see and issue with doing that. In the meantime the children can put their stuff away and chat amongst themselves getting ready for the activity. I don’t think it’s professional when it happens everyday because it can reflect as you being late everyday.

Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
No I don’t think it is professional to finish a child’s art project if they ask you to. I think it’s important for them to complete their own work and doing that can end up with other children asking you for the same thing. I think it’s okay to help but not do it for them as they might get used to it.

Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
I do think it is professional to ask for help from a family because I believe parent and family engagement is very important for the development of a child. Getting parents or guardians involved in their child’s school life benefits everyone in the situation.

Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
I don’t think it’s professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit because it takes sometime to find a replacement, especially when working with children. You need to have the conversation more than or 2 weeks in advance.

    Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    Which stations did you pick?
How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?
    3. In this case I will explain that if they want I can put them in a oversized t shirt that will cover their child’s clothes and prevent them from getting dirty. I will explain to them the importance of play and hands on activities.

    4. I will give her a couple more times to change her habits and if she doesn’t I tell her that the next time she is late that I will have to report her.

    8. First I’d probably try to explain to them the situation they cannot play outside because it is dangerous. Then I would try to create enough space for them to play in the classroom and then put on the movie.

    1. Hi Sydney, I do not agree with you because children always need our attention anything can happen with your back turned and while you are setting up it is dangerous. I believe the classroom activities should be prepared before the day because early morning observations of the childs overall health are important to know what day they had before entering the classroom.

      1. Hi Sydney, I do agree with #1 especially if the child is allergic to stay away but I hate eating in front of students so I don’t think I would. but I totally get your point of view

  10. 1. I think it depends on what the schools policy is in order to make that call. In a way I do think it can be professional as you can demonstrate a good healthy diet if they see you eat fruit and vegetables in front of them it opens them more to maybe trying new food. Some private schools have the TA’s and Paraprofessionals eat with the children as that is when they get a break to eat as well. I don’t think it is professional to each in front of the kids if you know they have allergies to something. If working with younger children it may be tricky to eat in front of them as it is not appropriate to share food with them. You should always follow what your school says is acceptable.
    2. In my opinion it can go either way, depending on if there is another teacher in the classroom. It may help some students to see the teacher put up the schedule for the day or put out activites, this ca help kids that are having a hard time to ease up. This may be helpful for students to feel a sense of understanding to see what is happening and when. If the child is having hard time the teacher can ask the kid/kids to help set up to make them feel like they have a say in what they are doing.
If there is only one teacher in the classroom it may not be the best idea, although it does happen often, we are all only humans. A child or parents may need to speak to the teacher and if the teacher is preoccupied by setting up they may miss something important.
    3. No, I don’t think it is professional to finish a childs art work. By doing so we may be taking form the child’s learning, and making them feel unmotivated or have a lower self-esteem. This may also promote the child to get used to asking for someone to do their work when things get hard, rather than problem solving on their own or with redirection.
4.Yes, I do think it is professional to ask a family member for help. If the family member is more knowledgeable about a certain activity or can just assist i don’t see a problem. I believe this would also promote relationship skills if the kids see the teacher with a family member as an adult being helped.
    5. I do not think it is professional to give just a one week notice. The process of finding the right fit for the classroom and the children takes much longer than a week.

    6;
    1) Scenario 4-
I would point our this specific part of the code of ethics. I would express it is not acceptable and not a safe environment for both the children and myself. I would suggest working together to make a schedule that works so they can get to work in time. Find different routes that may be better.

    2) Scenario 10
I would express to the whole classroom that even though we are thought to share with our friends and family at school it is not allowed. I would find appropriate literature to go along with he discussion so the children can have a better understanding. I would speak to Alia’s parents and explain what happened, as we can’t always prevent everything I would hope they would understand. In addition I would write an email to all the families and ask them to speak to their children about not sharing food, not only for allergies by for perusal reasons.

    3) Scenario 3
I would express to the family they are welcome to purchase a smock for their child and our their name on it. I would suggest this so the child can use it during play time. I would also try to explain to the parents that their child may feel singled out or left out if they aren’t doing the same activities. I’d also advise to kindly send a few extra sets of clothes in case their child were to get dirty.

    1. Hi Maria, I don’t agree with you because family-style eating is very important to help encourage table manners, practical life skills using eating utensils, and imitation skills. From my experience, allergy-prone foods are not allowed in the school building which would be known before eating alongside the children.

  11. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
Yes, it is professional to eat in front of children while they are eating it helps to promote family-style eating, imitate table manners, and practical life skills.
Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
I do not think it is appropriate to be setting up the morning activities as the children arrive because it should be done beforehand. This is the time where we observe the children make sure they arrived safe and well from home to school and get them settled for the day.
Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
I think it is professional to help the child but to encourage them to finish on their own this is a time to encourage creativity and confidence in their work.
Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
I think it is professional to ask a family with help with activity depending on the situation, it can promote family inclusion and enhance the relationship with the families and the teacher, but not on an everyday occasion if you’re struggling with the children that are not theirs.
Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
I do not think it is professional to give a week’s notice to quit this kind of job because children need consistency and time to adjust to new changes and it will take time to rebuild trust inside of a classroom again.

How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?
3- I’ll make sure that their child is always wearing an apron for messy activities and encourage the family to bring an extra pair of clothes that they do not care about so much.

4-I’ll ask my co-worker if everything is ok and what is stopping them from coming on time. If that does not help the situation I will have to bring it up to higher authority because there is a group size ratio.

8- I will reject the disney movie offer. I will allow the children to do snow activities in order to engage with the weather outdoors indoors by doing ice paining with snow and snow melting into water activities enough to keep them engaged.

  12. 1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
During lunch time I do feel there’s a little wiggle room to eat with the children as long as you have your eyes on the children. But there should be a rotation between you and the other teachers. If the school doesn’t allow that, then no.
Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
Morning classroom preparation should be done prior to the children arriving. I don’t see it being unprofessional because every situation dictates and maybe there’s a routine in place where one teacher sets up while the other greets in the morning. I do highly agree that morning preparation should be done prior though.
    2. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
I don’t see it as unprofessional, but I strongly suggest encouraging the child to finish it on their own. Instead of finishing the art project, you can help assist them with it, but shouldn’t finish it.
    3. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
Depending on the activity I don’t see an issue getting advice or help from family, however the family members do not know your class the way that you do, so that can alter the activity. But I don’t see it as being unprofessional.
    4. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?

    5. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1. Which stations did you pick?
    2. How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?

    6. You believe children learn through play and hands-on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.

In this situation I would explain to the parents how important it is for the children to explore their senses and the importance in sensory play. I would encourage the parents to leave behind an extra pair of clothing for the children that they do not care for so that the child can change into that during these activities.

    7. Your co-worker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives

In this situation I would speak to my co-worker on the side and first ask if everything is okay and ask why she is constantly late to work. In the situation that an issue is present I would offer advice or help. Depending on how severe the situation is or if it’s ongoing I would bring it up through the chain of command and request for another assistant.

    8. Alia cannot eat pork because of her family’s religious beliefs. Her friend Jose offered to share his ham sandwich with her. While you were helping another child, Jose gave Alia some of his sandwich and she ate it.

In this situation I would speak to Jose in a calm way and explain to him that Alia cannot eat pork. I would explain this to him in a child friendly way so that he can attempt to understand. I would definitely mention it to both Alia and Jose’s parents so that they are aware of the situation and encourage Jose’s parents to talk to him about why it wasn’t safe.

  13. 1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
In this question I could say that yes, it is professional, and it is not professional. this is depending of the purpose of your behavior. For example, if the purpose to help children to learn certain eating rules as they see you doing things effectively and then they will imitate from you the good behavior than it is ok. Since children always need to see an ideal to follow, in classroom you should be their ideal. In the other hand, if you one to eat because you need to eat, then I think it is good to eat far away from children in your break.
    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
In my opinion it is not professional to set up morning activities with children as they arrive because I need to start the activity with them. Also, I need to be able to observe them as they arrive and follow both child and family concern at that moment. I think an educator should be prepared before. However for example if there is exception to change the activity because there is circumstances that forces you to do so, then is fine just we have to do it effectively the way that everyone should be comfortable educator, family and kids.

    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
It is not professional to finish child art project because I am preventing him from boosting his or her abilities, instead of helping him to learn. In this situation I think I will see why the child want to stop his activity and I will try to approach to him or her in order to understand the reason behind his decision. Thus, support him the way he or she needs.

    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
If the purpose is to involve families in the schooling of their children, then yes, it is professional and important to have parents’ opinion. Otherwise, it not professional because we are require to do our job and we should not seek our individual concern with families.

    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
I think it is not professional to give a week notice if you want to quit. Especially if you planned that for long time because you should give your boss time to search effective educator that could replace you.

    8. There has been a blizzard and the snow has prevented you from taking your class outside for over a week. The students are getting restless and you are struggling to keep them busy inside. Another teacher has offered to lend you a full-length animated Disney movie.

I will try to find an activity that could help me to handle the situation in the same. For example, engage children in an activity that will motivate them such as changing the class decoration to snow landscape with their own paint or draw, even written paper that describe snow are hand made snowmen or if they are interested to another topic, I will do it with them. Try to find various idea and strategies that will keep them learning and motivated.

    3. You believe children learn through play and hands-on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.

I will explain to that family the advantages of this kind of activities and explain its role in fostering children’s development. after that I will advise them to give their children extra clothes distinguished for this activity. I should inform them about the schedule, and they will know that today is messy activity then they take their precaution.

10 Alia cannot eat pork because of her family’s religious beliefs. Her friend Jose offered to share his ham sandwich with her. While you were helping another child, Jose gave Alia some of his sandwich and she ate it.

I will communicate to my children to do not share their foods or accept any offer from their classmate until they ask me, and I will explain for them why I am telling them that. Also, inform Alia’s family about what was happening.

    1. Hey
This is Luis Martinez, you incorporated very well the information about the importance of being culturally sensitive in the classroom for question 10, which is the part for the ethical dilemmas in teaching worksheet.Your response was very specify in terms of functionality and cultural awareness.

    2. great job ! I loved the answer for what would you do incase a child who couldn’t eat pork ate some, I answered that one too but it didn’t cross my mind to talk to the children about not sharing food.

    Professionalism Questions

Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?

I would say yes and no, this depends on the situation that we are in, for example if there is a celebration/important events in school that takes place at the classroom ( a child’s birthday party, PTA celebration, fabulous Fridays celebrations) it will be okay to eat in front of the children. It will not be right if we are eating in front of a supervisor who comes to the class do conduct an observation during class time. It will be best if teachers ate during their lunch break.

Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?

Yes, of course it, it’s a way to get ahead, by setting up lesson or activities earlier. Extra minutes means that teachers can have more time to spend on a subject that children are struggling with. It’s also beneficial because if the activity requires students to constantly rotate/change from one station to another, since the materials are already set up, it saves time enough for teachers to do a mini demonstration of how to do the activity or simply checking in with students to see what materials are missing in the table, instead of setting up all the materials at the last minute, which would be more stressful and more painful because the teacher may misplace objects on the wrong stations.

Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?

Even though It’s our moral obligation to respond to every child’s needs and interest, but we should always be encouraging children to complete their artworks by themselves, if they do not get to finish because of time, we could always offered them extra time for the next day for them to continue. We could always provide assistance to every student when needed, we could help them with cutting, pasting, or even choosing color that they might like but not interfering into their ideas or into their drawing.

Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?

This depends on the circumstance of the activity or lesson that I am directing, I believe that a family member can help me, for example by distributing the materials of the activity, and also assisting the basic needs of the children not the complex needs, but not helping me with the lesson because the parents are not professionally trained which means that they do not have the credentials and the childhood education requirements certification ,on how to teach children in terms of complex education and learning methods.

Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?

Absolutely not because a teacher cannot leave/quit in the middle of the school year unless is a medical reason or a family issue or other situation that interferes a teacher’s teaching. A teacher leaving notice may disrupt what have children learned so far, some students will feel lost because they got used to how the previous teacher teach (teaching styles and methods).

    Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas

You believe children learn through play and hands-on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.

I would gladly say to the family “sure don’t worry I provide my student a cloth so that it will protect him from getting dirty. I would provide Andy with a comfortable long sleeve art apron, I also will make sure that as Andy moves from one station to the other, I will provide him a handful of baby wipes so that he can clean the dirty areas.

Your co-worker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives

I would respectfully address this small issue with my coworker in professional matter that shows respect for personal dignity and maintaining confidentiality. We could have a private conversation where we could discus alternative options that will be affective for both of us. I want him/he to know that this is safe space free of judgment and biases, where she/he could feel safe expressing his concerns and problems.

You see your co-worker using a rope with handles to guide a group of students down the hall. When the students come to the stairwell, the first student starts to walk up the steps. The staff member tells the students to wait but the students didn’t hear her. The staff member yanks the rope, causing the first student to fall from the step. The girl falls down landing with her arms outstretched in front of her, and starts to cry.

Challenging situations like the one presented above; I will do my best to have to come up with alternative effective solutions that work for both sides the child’s family and my coworker, I would informed the child’s family about the incident that happened earlier in the day, I would take my student to the nurse’s office, just to make sure that she is fine and that her overall health is not a critical stage. I would strongly advice the child’s family to take her daughter the doctor’s office in case if their child shows symptoms that do not fall within the normal spectrum. Whereas for my coworker she/he will receive some sort of penalty for her actions, such as receiving intensive proper training about how to better handle challenging situations with younger children.

    1. Great job, i loved your answer for what would you do if your co-worker was tardy. what would you do if that didn’t work? would you talk to the director?

  15. 1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?
I think it is perfectly professional and normal to eat while the children are eating. School is normally 6hrs long, so it is important for the teachers to eat something in order to perform well.
    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?
No, I think the classroom should be set up before the children start school so that when school begins the children know what they have to do and the teachers attention is directed at them and not setting the classroom up.
    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?
No, I think it is unprofessional to do a child’s project unless they ask for help. A child should try to finish the project and learn to ask for help if needed.
    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
Yes, I think this should be encouraged. If a lesson or activity is practiced at home the child will learn it better or understand it better and be encouraged by family.
    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
I think you should give your boss more than a week’s notice so that they can find adequate replacement.
    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1. Which stations did you pick?
    2. How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?
#1 I would speak to Andrea and explain that napping helps Zachary enjoy class activities and get along with children. Also, since everyone is napping, he can’t be awake cause it might disturb the children napping.
#4 I would speak to the co-worker and ask her to please arrive on time since its difficult for me to be with all the children at the same time. If this behavior continues I would speak to the director or principal
#10 I would speak to Alia’s family and explain what happened and explain how I was helping another child. I would apologize and be more diligent next time.

  16. Module 4 Assignment #2: Ethics & Professionalism When Working with Preschool Age Children

    1. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?

I do not think it is professional to eat while they are eating because the teacher can be so focused on what you are eating, including organizing it and just a short second your eyes might be off the students, and anything can happen. In most cases, two persons are in a room so teachers could take turns to eat. I am still wondering about the professional part and I would be more concern with keeping my eyes on them. I have not seen in the Code of Ethics, anything relating to that.

    2. Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?

It is not professional to be setting up the room when students are entering. The teacher should be at the door to greet each student as he/she enters. Also, your eyes must be focused on them after they enter, to ensure that everyone stays safe.

    3. Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?

Finishing the work is unethical because you are not helping the student to achieve on her merit. Likewise, that would be biased because you would not be helping all the students to complete their projects. Guiding the student if she needs help should be very different from finishing the work.

    4. Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?

Ideals 1.2.3 Ideals said teacher should welcome all family members and encourage them to participate in the program, including involvement in shared decision making. It could be a lesson that speaks about an area that the parent is knowledgeable in and can make valuable inputs. For example, I am teaching about deforestation in Central America and someone on staff or who I know comes from that region. I am going to reach out to that person to tell me more about deforestation. This can make a big difference in my lesson planning.

    5. Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?
I know the DOE says 30 calendar days’ notice should be given. Failing that, a person can be blocked from re-applying to another institution.

    6. Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    1. Which stations did you pick?
    2. How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?

    4. Your co-worker is constantly late which means you are alone with all of the children until she arrives.
-We cannot not assume what is happening in people’s lives, so I would talk to my co-worker to see if there is anything I can do to help and try to see how best I can help. Or if she needs a change in schedule (if that is possible), I would tell her t talk to the relevant persons to see how they could help. Constantly being late will lead to some type of consequences. So, if we can fit it together, that would be good.

    3. You believe children learn through play and hands-on learning activities. This involves messy play. A new family enrolls in the program and says they do not want their son’s clothes to get dirty.

-I would ask the family to bring a written document stating her request. We cannot force a parent to go against her will. We can make suggestions to allow her to see the benefits of play other than the dirt. However, her child would have to stay away from that activity.

    Ethical Responsibilities to Families states:
I-2.5—To respect the dignity and preferences of each family and to make an effort to learn about its structure, culture, language, customs, and beliefs to ensure a culturally consistent environment for all children and families.

6 A group of families met to your director saying they want their children to be
taught more academic skills. Based on that meeting your director decided that
the 3- and 4-year-olds work on worksheets during center time each morning.

-I am referring back to code 1-2.5 above, we have to try and facilitate them– it could mean that all 3 and 4-year-old children might not be able to do that work. As the teacher, this is were differentiation comes in because I would have to provide work that all students will be able to do. So, everyone will be working, but some will have modified tasks.

  17. Is it professional to eat in front of the children while they are eating? Why?

I think its fine if the kids are in their lunch break as well, because otherwise they will want your food .

Is it professional to be setting up the morning activities in the classroom as the children arrive in the morning? Why?

I feel like that’s not professional because you have to be organized and prepared with the activities you’re going to do for the day with the kids.

Is it professional to finish a child’s art project if the child asks you to? Why?

It’s not professional to finish a child’s art project because they won’t learn how to do things by themselves and they also are going to get used to people finish what they started.

Is it professional to ask a family to help with an activity/ lesson you are leading? Why?
I think it is professional to ask they’re parents to practice the lesson at home, so that way the child is more prepared for the next day and learn it faster.

Is it professional to give your boss a week’s notice if you plan to quit? Why?

It is not professional to give a week notice. I feel they have to prepared themselves in other to get another replacement . Also, it will be professional if the teacher before quitting leave a couple of lessons ready until they find a replacement.

    Pick 3 Ethical Dilemmas.
    Which stations did you pick?
How would you handle the situation if you were the teacher in the classroom? WHY?

#3. I will suggest the parents if is fine for they’re kid to use a different clothes on top of theirs in order to participate in those activities. I also will explain the importance in a kid when it comes to play with toys.
#4 I will have a meeting after class with her and ask her why is being late is being a routine for her and suggest her what she need to do to get on time to work.

#6 first I will make a meeting with other kids parents to see if everyone agrees and I will create a activity that its based on a worksheet
