  1. 1.Think about the best teacher you ever had (any teacher you had from pre-k to college). What did that teacher do that made them your best teacher?
Answer: Thinking about the best teacher I ever had what made her the best teacher for me was she was understanding and took her time with me. Sometimes when being a educator you don’t have time to really focus on one student because you have others throughout the day. But she didn’t let me fall through the cracks. She made sure if I needed help with anything she would help me. She stood after school hours just to make sure I would pass my regents. Gave me extra assignments just to study, even on the weekends she would come pick me up from my home and take me to study. I passed my regents with nothing but a 97 just because she went that extra mile for me.

2.What qualities and behaviors from that teacher would you like to emulate/copy?
Answer: The qualities from my old teacher I would like to emulate is her calmness, kindness, commitment. As far as her behavior I would love to emulate her conscientious (taking the time to do things right overall doing the right thing doesn’t matter how long it may take).

3.Why do you want to work in early childhood education?
Answer: The reason why I want to work in early childhood education is because I want to become a child life specialist, which is in the pediatric healthcare profession they help infants, children, youth and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability, loss and bereavement. They provide evidence-based, developmentally and psychologically appropriate interventions including therapeutic play, preparation for procedures, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain. I noticed after having a disabled sibling that it discourages alot of people and I do want to come into this profession letting families know that it is fine and they’re normal children filled with love.

4.What is the difference between a job and a profession?
Answer: The difference between a job and a profession is a job is more so for short term. Jobs usually don’t have an significant impact of the person’s life. For example if a person is unhappy with a job they will find a new one. It basically means a work for which one is regularly paid in some job you may not need as much educational experience. For example clerks, waiters, sale associates, etc. As far as a profession it’s based on specialized educational training. Something that can be long term. For example being a MD’ have lot of years of study, pass the boards and also complete residency for a certain amount of years before he/she can be qualified as a doctor. A profession is where you’ll need high level of education. For example medical, legal, teaching, etc.

5.What qualities or behaviors do we expect from professionals (any/ all professionals)?
Answer: We expect from all professionals a comprehensive listener. Someone who will understand where we’re coming from and just understands. Sometimes people can be push overs and also overly dramatic but I do believe we need someone who will take the time out and try to understand the needs of an individual and try to compromise or make the situation much better.

6.Is working in early childhood education a profession?
Answer: I do believe working in early childhood education is a profession because you do need a certain educational training to become an childhood educator. For example, if you wanted to become a kindergarten teacher you would need your BA degree in early childhood education and also take the teacher state boards. Or even if you didn’t want to work in the school field and wanted to be more so in the hospital field to become a childcare specialist you need your BA and also complete a certain amount of hours in programs to get into childcare.

7.What about working with infants and toddlers?
Answer: Yes, same goes for infants and toddlers. Just because they may be smaller and aren’t developed all the way yet they do matter in the professional world.

8.What qualities or behaviors do we expect from early childhood professionals?
Answer: From early childhood professionals we do expect precise individuals. Being careful and with great attention to detail. Being that the childhood profession do deal with children a parent would want his/her child to be in the hands of someone who will be precise with their child.

    1. I can relate to your answer for question one , my English teacher was very understanding and patient. I likeTeachers who take the time to really work with their students .

    2. Hi Janate

I agree with you on question number 8. I believe we have to pay attention to details when we are observing children. This is a skill we must have under our belt to understand children’s needs. Gaining parent’s trust is important as well. With trust parents and teachers would be able to work better together for the child’s benefit.

    3. You have a tough job on your hands I commend you on working alongside ECE educators. As a mother with preterm born twins, it is an important job to understand the development of children. I am grateful to have been educated before I had my daughters to understand their developmental delays but there are families who will need your service. Push forward and continue .

    4. Hi Janate,
I really enjoyed reading about your teacher. I can relate to that too the best teacher I had was understanding and patient too. Which is something I hope to be as an educator too.

    2. Hi Emily ,
My favorite/best teacher was my English 9th grade teacher, so cool! and you are already working in your field which is super amazing! Wish you the best in your journey!

    3. Hi Emily,
I love that you acknowledge the fact that kids can and are so unique, they truly are, specially when you give them the time but also reassuring them how great they are. That’s what makes a great educator, even more if working with younger children.

    4. Hi Emily, I am also a toddler teacher and a toddler mom of twin girls. This is a job for passionate and patient people and I am happy there are educators like you and me who have a passion for children.

  3. 1. Think about the best teacher you ever had (any teacher you had from pre-k to college). What did that teacher do that made them your best teacher?
When I think of the best teacher I had I can’t help but think of my 4th grade teacher, Miss. Duransalent. What made her the best teacher in my eyes was her patience, enthusiastic, loving, caring and always willing to help her students. I was in a ESL class at the time with her, and I believe if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t of been for her I would not be the English speaker I am today.
    2. What qualities and behaviors from that teacher would you like to emulate/ copy?
I would most definitely emulate her patience, her sense of understanding, being a good listener and her devotion to the classroom.

    3. Why do you want to work in early childhood education?
As a late bloomer that is just now attending college, it has given me the opportunity to see and experience what working with children is about. I want to become a Special Education teacher, and work in early childhood in specific due to the fact the that I have been doing so for the past 3 years and I absolutely love working with the younger children. Their drive, opinions, imagination is something that is so special and that age, you can’t help but feel happy and moved by them. I want to make sure children know what it means to have a teacher that they can always count on no matter what and be someone that makes even the smallest impact in their life.

    4. What is the difference between a job and a profession?
In my option a job can be any job you may be capable of acquiring but a profession is something you work towards. A profession is something you are setting up for yourself for the years to come. A job can be something that is seasonal, short term, even something that is unwanted but needed. Job can be something that is “safe” for the individual but a profession is something that is fulfilling to the individual.

Being punctual, honest, hard working and respectful of others. As well as keeping a healthy work force environment.
    6. Is working in early childhood education a profession?
Yes, I strongly believe working in early childhood education is a profession. There is a lot of training that has to be done in order to work in the field, it is a job you have long term in your life. Whether you work as a teacher assistant, paraprofessional, or head teacher there was a time where there were a log of schooling and training that had to be done in order for you to start a profession in early childhood education.
    7. What about working with infants and toddlers?
Working with infants and toddlers is just as much of a profession as working with any age group. Even though they are younger teaching is done every day in a way that molds to their capabilities. Working with younger children does not take from being a profession.

    1. Hi Elianna. The Gabriel Fernandez story was a very hard documentary to watch. That documentary also inspired me even more to pursue early childhood education because school and teachers should be save safe haven. Growing up, we mostly spend time at school, away from our parents and home, so building a safe and loving environment for your students is a must. Being able to not only provide love and care but educate them and advance their cognitive development etc.. Young children cannot defend themselves like older children can, so thats where we as future teachers come in and advocate for them.

    2. Hey Elinna. I love how your teachers were dedicated to help you through that. I also love how you mentioned the Gabriel Fernandez story, schools are sort of like a home away from home for majority of students so it’s important that they get the care they need there as well.

    2. What qualities and behaviors from that teacher would you like to emulate/ copy?
-I am professional, kind, emphatic, sociable, people person and enjoy encouraging students to do their best to graduate from high school and move on to college. As I am now writing, it was yesterday, May 28, 2020, I was marking a task from my students about career choice and one of my consistent working male students said he wanted to do some areas of engineering. I was so pleased about his plans for the next three (3) years of his life. I called and encouraged him and gave him some advice about his choice and how it will be very rewarding for him.

-I am working with teenagers and I am passionate about helping students to achieve their educational and personal goals.
    4. What is the difference between a job and a profession?

I agree with your qualities and and behaviors expected from teachers because I too believe that it is important that teachers are sociable, empathetic and professional. They have to be able to communicate with their students and be approachable in order to connect with their students and build trust. Empathy is a big factor too because you never know what students go through outside of school, for some, school is a safe haven. And of course, professionalism is a must, teachers always want to maintain a level of professionalism and show that they respect themselves, their work, and students.

  9. Think about the best teacher you ever had (any teacher you had from pre-k to college). What did that teacher do that made them your best teacher?

The best teach I had was my high school English teacher, Mr. Zambrana. I grew up in a very poor neighborhood in Harlem and my teacher was born and raised in the same neighborhood. Aside from being an English teacher, he gave us knowledge on the outside world and helped us overcome the obstacles we faced as minorities. He saw the good in us when other teachers didn’t. He prepared us not only for college but the world itself. Because of him, Myself and others were able to make it to college, whether it was a 2 year or 4 year. He spoke to us as human beings and understood that our paths weren’t paved smoothly and helped guide us to success.

What qualities and behaviors from that teacher would you like to emulate/ copy?

Mr. Zambrana was very professional and well educated. He was very humble and cared for his students. When we had a bad apple in the class, he didn’t look at that individual as being a bad apple but someone he had to focus on a little bit more because he saw that potential in them. Those are qualities and behaviors that I admire the most about him and would hope to have the same affect on my students even though they will be young.

Why do you want to work in early childhood education?

To me, early education is a very important time period for people. It is the foundation of our future and our capabilities. Children mostly spend more time around their teachers then they do with their parents so my role as an educator is very important. I want to be able to make a difference at such an early age and know that I helped create an important asset to the world. I want to do everything that I can to help expand their learning abilities and overall development.

What is the difference between a job and a profession?

In my opinion, A job is a source of income that doesn’t require you to have any educational back ground. It requires on the job training whereas a profession requires specific training, a specific level of education (College) and is more long term.

Yes, working with infants and toddlers are no different. Working with that age bracket requires just as much skill sets, knowledge and training. The Childs life and care is in your hands and the person needs to be properly educated and trained on the development levels

What qualities or behaviors do we expect from early childhood professionals?

We expect child professionals to be kind, nurturing, educated, patient, humble. We expect them to be able to communicate not only with the children but with the parents in order to be able to express concerns, provide suggestions need be and talk about the Childs progress.

    1. Hi Tania
