Culture is a way of life of particular groups of people. This means that its the way a group of people think, say, what they do . culture is learned and transmitted from generation to generation. It is customs and traditions that they all do . Its a pattern of behavior shared by a society , or group of people. Culture makes us who we are. Growing up I had to move to a different country as a young child who did not speak the new language. My parents never finished High School in our country and they always pushed my siblings and I to better ourselves and have a a better future. I am a first generation attending college, which makes them ver proud. My culture of growing up in my country and always cooking with my Grandmother and family is something that definitely had a big impact in my life, even to this day I love to cook for all my friends and family. It t brings me so much joy to see other’s eating my food that is part of my Guatemalan heritage. Growing up in Texas and not speaking English also affected me at a early age, since my parents didn’t speak the language my siblings and I had to learn it fast in order to help our parents with paperwork and important decision making. Until this day I get nervous filling out documents either for myself of my parents, even though I am completely fluent in English now. This also makes me be more caring and understanding of other people when I see them struggling to find the appropriate words to communicate. Having to move to a new country at a young age has affected the way I deal with transitions and being able to adapt to new environments at a rapid pace, or to communicate with new individuals I may encounter.

4.What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?

According to Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, children typically find themselves enmeshed in various ecosystems, from the most intimate home ecological system to the larger school system, and then to the most expansive system which includes society and culture. Each of these ecological systems inevitably interact with and influence each other in all aspects of the children’s lives.

I grow up in big family I have 3 sisters and 6 brothers, we grow up all together, I am in 6th place order. I spoke my native language until the age of six when I started school. Then, I needed to learn a new language which was continued in my education path. After 4 years of school we started to learn the third language (two languages in school are mandatory and I keep talking our native at home or out of school). Therefore, today I am a person who talk three languages, plus English as I am leaving in America. That time we do not have all the opportunities to learn and play as today. However, I enjoyed my infancy with our simple games, and it helped me to learn many things, I remember I was persistent to be the winner in any game we play. know I am also that persistent person. Moreover, in my culture I must follow certain rule and costumes we celebrate holydays that distinguish us. Now I still following certain rules and behavior even though I am leaving in another country that have different culture different lifestyle and different rule which I am learning and adapting for it.

    4. What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory is the theory that study child development as he or she lives in a particular environment. This approach called proximal system. Which means to observe and analyze children in their real environment closely and try to understand the components of their behavior because Bronfenbrenner believes that the environment influences greatly the cognitive development of children. This theory divide to the environment in 4 levels:
    a. Microsystem: the environment where the child live and spend his time with, such as family school. It is the environment in which a child has a direct contact.
    b. Mesosystem: it is the relationships between child’s environment for example the relation ship between family and school.
    c. Exosystem: it is the aspect that affect child indirectly for example an uncomfortable job for parents my affect tuition.
    d. Macrosystem: this is related to the impact of culture

My mother had me as a teenager and we practically grew up together. She never finished High School but my father did. Both of my parents were very big on school, but because I grew up in a poor neighborhood in Harlem the schools nearby weren’t the best. My household was very Bi-lingual, we lived with my grandparents because of how young my parents were, and my grandparents were all raised in different countries still getting familiar with the American lifestyle. Both of my parents cultures were different, my mom is Dominican and my dad is Puerto Rican and they were both raised differently, therefore I was raised with a little bit of everything. Because of how young and poor my family was I didn’t have a lot of resources, but my parents did their best in providing me the extra at home education and keeping me at the dinner table until I completed my work. This allowed me to view life differently and appreciate everything. Growing up I felt like I worked harder then my friends because I had so much to prove to myself and my family.

What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological systems theory is that there are 4 different type of environments. Our environment influences and shapes our development and the way we live.

Why is Bronfenbrenner’s theory important to us as early childhood educators?
Bronfenbrenner’s theory is important to us early childhood educators because it pushes us to gain relationships with not only the children but their parents as well and to be consistent with communication to better understand each child and how to use that to better assist the child.

    What is culture?
Culture is the set of ideas, behaviors, attitudes, and traditions that exist within large groups of people. It is the heritage that is shared by that group and is passed on from generation to generation. Aspects of culture are factors within a person/family’s background that influence how a person/family adopts and implements their culture.

How does culture impact young children’s growth and development?
Culture can influence our thoughts, behaviors, knowledge, beliefs, values, and relationships. Their culture impacts how they are raised and what they believe in therefore it impacts their growth and development also.

How did your culture impact your growth and development? (use info from your Aspects of Culture chart)
I was raised in a two parent house hold with older parents and a teenage brother, this is my family composition and i do think it impacted my growth and development. My brother was almost 17 years older than me so I was basically raised as an only child and have a lot of only child tendencies. I am a girl so I was also raised differently than my brother because my parents are considered old school. I was born in Brooklyn and I spent a lot of time with my father’s side of the family who are Haitian and speak Creole. Although I do not speak the language now I used to be able to understand the basics, I think my interest in other languages is what led me to do well in all my Spanish classes throughout my academic life. My family was not that religious, which is what led me to create my own religious identity now as an adult and be more open with my spirituality. I think my parents being some what flexible and open with me made me become a very open minded person.

What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?
Urie Brofenbrenner believed that the environment in which a child grows up in will shape and affect his or her development. This ecological system includes the physical, social, cultural, financial, political, and religious aspects of the environment in which the child matures and grows in an adult. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological systems theory is an observation on the ecological system of the child to understand and explain the child’s development. The environment is divided into 4 different levels first being the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and the macrosystem. The microsystem is the system where the child has the most direct contact. The mesosystem is the system where the relationships between the various components of the microsystem are. The exosystem is the connections between a child and a setting which affect them but they do not have any contact. And the mesosystem includes the background of all the other systems, which includes culture.

Why is Bronfenbrenner’s theory important to us as early childhood educators?
It can explain and help educators understand the development of a child and can also help educators learn their students better and how to better interact with or relate to them. It’s what helps us understand the upbringing of students and what affects or impacts the student. It’s important that educators examine all aspects of a child’s life to truly understand them in order to have the ability to work with them so they can do their best.

I listened to Spanish music in my dads car while listening to American music in my mom’s because my dad was more culturally connected to his Puerto Rican background. No one in my family has completed college so far I have surpassed the standards of my family’s educational background.
What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?

    1. What is culture?
Culture are customs and the way of life that you have in common with other, such as food, tradition, art etc.
    2. How does culture impact young children’s growth and development?
Culture can impact a child’s way of life, they can grow up having the same believes as the people they grew up with which will shape how a child does many things.
    3. How did your culture impact your growth and development? (use info from your Aspects of Culture chart)
I think two things that impacted my growth and development because of culture are ethnicity, and gender roles. I am very connected to where my family is from, Ecuador. We have certain food or traditions that we follow that are so familiar to me but when I talk about them with other people they have never heard of it. One example is, every April we make something called fanesca and it’s a pretty big deal for us. It’s not only a way for the whole family to gather but also for us to honor the virgin Mary. Another thing that impacted the person I am today is gender roles, unfortunately in my household we are thought that women should be doing the house work and the men shouldn’t touch anything. This is something that I’ve always been against, now as an adult I live with my boyfriend and I often find myself doing most of the housework. He’s more than happy to help out, but I think because of the way I grew up I don’t even give him a chance to really help because it’s already done. This is something I am working on.
    4. What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?
Bronfenbrenner believed that the environment a child is developing in will shape who they become.
    5. Why is Bronfenbrenner’s theory important to us as early childhood educators?
This is important because by understanding the child’s culture or environment we can understand the child better.

I was an active child running, jumping, climbing all over and doing male and female activities so that contributed to my physical development.

    4. What is Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?
-That human development is influenced by the different types of environmental systems. These systems include the micro system, the mesosystem, the exosystem, the macro system, and the chronosystem. The theory analyzes a person and examine the effects of the different environmental systems encountered. Thus, the theory argues that the environment a person grows up in, affects every facet of their lives.

    5. Why is Bronfenbrenner’s theory important to us as early childhood educators?

    Professor Jen Longley

    What is culture?

Culture is the beliefs we share with others, that we relate to and that we feel connected to. This includes spiritual beliefs which is the relationship to a superior being and are related to an existential perspective on life, death, and the nature of reality. Whereas for religious beliefs it is a set of practices/rituals such as prayer or meditation and engagement with religious community members. Culture is also the food we eat; it dictates the meals that we cook and prepare meals this could be based on religion, holydays, traditions, homemade styles, and among more. Culture is also the clothes we wear every day; clothes that we wear could also meaning it could to represent ourselves in the way that we most feel comfortable with, such as representing our country, our beliefs gay pride, to represent our religion practices and views. Culture is also defined as the traditions we share with others such as getting married marriage celebrations are commonly celebrated across the world, music and dancing dance movements, steps, music genre, also the art we create, and the things we learn, last but not least even though our cultures are different we are still people, with families, and that we share the same earth.

How does culture impact young children’s growth and development?

Physical development, such as how a child develops motor skills and grows, can be impacted by cultural identity. Cultural factors like dietary restrictions and lifestyle choices may improve or impact a child’s growth both positive and negative, lifestyles are mostly influenced by society’s expectations and moral values of what it’s good and wrong. Cultural identity can also trigger what schools are good for us, what environments or institutions are best for us, where do we fit and how do we reach acceptance. Furthermore, child development is a dynamic, interactive process. Children growing up in different cultures receive specific inputs from their environment that they are supposed to fallowed and implement them into their lives as they grow up. For that reason, there’s a vast array of cultural differences in children’s beliefs and behavior. Language is one of the many ways through which culture affects development.

How did your culture impact your growth and development? (use info from your Aspects of Culture chart)

Parents in different cultures also play an important role in molding children’s behavior and thinking patterns. As we know, parents and guardians are the ones who prepare their children to interact with wider society as they transition from home to school and school to life? Cultural differences in interactions between adults and children also influence how a child behaves socially, basically parents seek for what is best for their child life, parents invest into their children’s life by given them an education, providing them with the most basic needs, given them what parents did not have as they were growing up. Well for me it will take months and years to tell my story, during my childhood years I faced a lot of obstacles, my parents grew up in small town where most of the population are closed minded and till this day people are still afraid to accept of what is different from them. I grew with a mindset that being gay will make me a bad person and that society will condemn me based on my sexual preferences, growing up I always felt safer and comfortable being around with girls instead of the boys of my age. I remember these days when I was playing dolls with my cousin (female), my aunt came up to me and said that boys should never and ever play with dolls because she said it make me go gay and stupid and that I would never become a real man if I keep playing with girl’s toys.

    Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory?

The theory of Ecological systems was constructed by Urie Bronfenbrenner. He arranged the environment into five different levels. The microsystem is the most influential, has the closest relationship to the person, and is the one where direct contact occurs. The mesosystem consists of interactions between a person’s microsystems. This theory looks at a child’s development in terms of the content of the system of relationships that form his or her environment. Bronfenbrenner’s theory defines complex “layers” of environment, each influencing a child’s development.

Why is Bronfenbrenner’s theory important to us as early childhood educators?

His theory is important for educators to understand because it allows the educator to build fundamental relationships with their students and create a communication rich classroom that involves the parents. Therefore, it’s highly important the teachers should constantly be monitoring and responding to each child’s needs, interest, and their learning styles. Events such as relationships between peers, parents, and teachers all are shaped in a child’s microsystem. It’s important that teacher should construct a network of trust and bond.
