In video 1 to my knowledge it looks like syntax because the child is trying to form sentences. This is the stag where children combine words to make sentences.
Video 2 i would say semantics because the child is one years old and is trying to communicate communicate.
Video 3 in this video the teacher is reading the students a book. I would say pragmatics because this is when children use language for different purposes. the language and communication skills and process the child is demonstrating in these videos is eye contact, laughing sentences and questions and reading , they have an interest in books.
The language and communication milestones the child agreed at their age is in video 3 speaking when the teacher would ask questions the students would reply. they enjoyed reading. In video 1 and 2 they children responds to simple spoken words. they try to make sounds.

    Video 1:
The children in the video are using pragmatics. The children are in a formal school setting which is influencing their communication skills within the context of the classroom.

    Video 2:

Cayden is using phonology because there is no meaning deriving out of his sounds. There is also no sense of syntax (word order). The sounds appear to be vague mimics of the words coming out of the mother’s mouth. The sound coming from Cayden appears to sound a bit like the mother’s words, but still too far away from formal language conventions.

    Video 3:

Katy was reading books to the kids while they would interact with the book and responding. The child is using semantics by listening to the teacher and responding a way that is appropriate for the context of the communications.

the children where using pragmatics. They are in structure school learning setting which can help there communication skills
    video2
the child kayden is using phonology because he has no sound of communication. which is a sense of syntax
    video3
katy was reading engaging in reading books as well interacting and using verbal communication. she is using semantics by listening to teacher in instructions

What language and communication milestones has the child achieved for their age?

    Answer:
    * Video #1 – In this video I only wanted to explain one child which was the female child using the white board. She is using her semantic skills she understands the meaning in different types of colors to use for the circles on the white board. The language and communication skills and processes the child is demonstrating is non-verbal communication by using her hands to make gestures for the white board & writing skills being able to draw. As far as language and communication milestones’ the child achieved for her age is writing because she is able to draw shapes and use different colors.

*Video #2 – In this video Kayden the toddler is using his phonological skill he invented words that are used consistently to express his specific meanings, but they were not real words in children target language. The language and communication skills and processes that Kayden is demonstrating is expressive language by babbling while talking to the adult even when the adult responds to Kayden he response back by babbling. As far as language and communication milestones Kayden achieved for his age is points to show what he is talking about , walks the direction he is explaining without any help, also makes sounds with changes in tone (sounds more like speech).

*Video #3 – In this video the teacher Katy is reading to the children and their responding by using semantic skills listening to the teacher and responding to her when she asks questions. The language and communication skills and processes Listening by listening to and understand age-appropriate stories read aloud, Speaking by answering simple yes or no questions, participating in the conversation Katy makes for the children. As far as language and communication milestones the children achieved for their ages is Receptive Language Receptive Language they comprehend the book & they story Kathy was reading

Video 1: The child in the video is demonstrating writing as a form of language as we all morphology by making shapes shes learning to communicate, being in a school setting with different activities will help her progress in her development. Listening and observing those around her, she responds to sounds indicating she is using phonology. It is hard say what milestones she has reached without assuming, since we see she can make shapes and has a grip on the market, however we don’t hear her speak.

Video 2: The child is the video is demonstrating he is listening and also speaking. He is using babbling which indicates precursor to actual speech, he is using morphology, he is also using expressive language by making different sounds having words with no meaning, he is using communication skills by making eye contact, gestures and facial expression. He responds to his mother as she asks about what keeps happening in his story even though he is just babbling. He is using turn talking through our the video, letting his mother converse then taking his turn, over and over. Milestones he has reached are being calm when hearing a familiar voice, responding to sounds when hearing sounds, jabbering, making vowel and letter sounds.

Video 3: In the video the children demonstrate listening, reading, having receptive and expressive language. The kids are paying close attention to the book being read, and responding with gestures, body movements and facial expressions. The children demonstrate phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatic language skills. The children also use receptive language as they understand the sound of the words from the book, they understand the language, they make comments and understand the conversation and follow commands when asked to wait for the rest of the story. They use expressive language by using words that have a meaning, when speaking to their teacher. They use communication skills by body movement, eye contact, initiating conversation and maintaining conversation. Literacy skills as also being used, although they are not the ones reading the book they are using their eyes and mind to follow the story. The children have reached milestones of reading, listening, reciting a familiar story, and can provide explanations,

    1. Denise Newland Stewart

I am in agreement with you Marian, especially with video 3. I liked how the children as you said were talking to their teacher and she encouraged their conversations, and added follow-up questions to help them think more and express themselves. I like the teacher’s approach.

Module 4 Post #2: Identifying Language Development

    Video 1 – 4 year old
    1. -The child used semantics. The drew some circles and though they might not convey meaning to me, they have meaning to her.

2 What language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating? How?
    Communication Skill and Processes
-Non-verbal – she used letters with could also be called symbols, she did not speak.
-Language Skills and Processes- she used both expressive and receptive language.
expressive – she created letters but to me they had no meaning
receptive-responded to sound she looked when someone was talking
Literacy skills- scribbled, drew, created letters
3 What language and communication milestones has the child achieved for their age?
-She did not speak so I cannot say which milestone she achieved
    1. Video 2 – 1 year old
    1. What language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating? How?
-Phonology – the baby was doing sounds of language and the caregiver was interactive, so he kept talking. The baby was saying his two consonant words.

    2. What language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating? How?
-He used verbal communication with sounds and laughing. Non-verbal communication with facial expression, he stared at the person talking. Communication skills- he gave eye contact, he got appropriate attention, initiated the conversation. Language skills- Expressive Language – words without meaning, Receptive language – responded to sound,
3 What language and communication milestones has the child achieved for their age?
-Used simple gestures like head signal, made sounds that changed in speech, tried to say words that was said.

    2. Video 3 – 4 years old

    1. Which of the 4 areas of language is the child using?
-The children were using syntax – They put their words together correctly. The teacher encouraged them to talk.
-Semantics-their language conveyed meaning. Teacher made meaning of what they said and further questioned them to see if they understood.

    3. What language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating? How?
-Communication skills-vocalization, sounds, words. Non-verbal-facial expressions and body language when they moved their heads and hands to make motion. Communication skills – the had eye contact, they looked at the book and pictures, the teacher got attention appropriately, she took turns when they were answering the questions so that they all had a chance to speak/answer. They maintained the conversation until the story ended and even then, they were still talking.
Language Skills – jargon-called the items by their names (vest, tie, jacket). They used words and knew their meaning. The asked questions about the story.
Receptive Language – Responded to sound, understood what language meant, responded to names, followed commands, understood conversations, comprehended book and story.
Literacy Skills- Identified pictures, identified words, identified abstract images(handkerchief), interested in books, read with others, comprehend sentences,

    3. What language and communication milestones has the child achieved for their age?
They told the story. They correctly used he for Joseph. Asked question and provided examples when the girl told the teacher that frayed fabric meant it was pulling a part.

    1. Luis Martinez

      Hey Denise Newland Stewart
This Is Luis Martinez, very detail response, nice job, your response included the various aspects of language development skills & processes, you incorporated what you learned from readings into your response .

  8. Yasmina Nait Slimane

    Video 1
In the video the four-year-old girl was drawing with different markers colored. She formed circles she demonstrated the ability to draw and she communicated her ability to make differences between colors. She demonstrated no verbal communication. she turned her head toward the noise of other children, and she gazed teacher while she was talking to others this reaction could infer that she now the meaning of sound and respond for it which mean she developed her no verbal expressive. since she did not use verbal language we could not indicate which language aspect that she developed or which one she had the ability to use.

    Video 2
The infant was one year old. He demonstrated an expressive language skill by responding to the lady who was talking with him. He was telling a story by jargoning which is the step that the child learns how to uses sound and without meaning. Thus, we could say that the infant is using the phonology area. Also, the infant uses the receptive language he recognized the familiar sounds from his environment. He uses the vowel and facial expression while having a conversation with the lady and responding to her questions when it is his turn to talk. These signs indicate that the infant had achieved his milestone development to his age.

    Video 3
The observation is for the 4year old children. It is appeared from this video that those kids had acquired a certain verbal language. They are able to use words with meaning as well as using sentences with correct syntax. They used their expressive skill by responding to the caregiver with correct words and sentences as well as asking question. They demonstrated their understanding to the conversation, answered questions, and comprehend the story from the book whish is indicate their receptive language skill. They used the gesture communication for example they tried to interpret by their hand the scissor’s function. In general, those kids had achieved their receptive and expressive milestone as well as they use almost all of the language aspects: phonology, morphology, syntax and semantic.

  9. Taina

    Video #1
In the video the area of language the child is demonstrating is writing. She is drawing shapes as a form of communication. She is demonstrating Semantics. I believe she’s demonstrating semantics because although she’s not being verbal, her drawings are telling a story, therefore they have meaning. For her milestone, for her age group, she’s able to express herself through writing/ drawing.

    Video #2
In the Video the area of language the child is demonstrating is Listening and speaking. Although he is using baby jargon to communicate, he is demonstrating Pragmatics as he awaits his turn to speak, being able to hold a conversation. The language skills that he is demonstrating is receptive language as well as expressive language. He is also showing his listening skills, as he waits to hear a response before he talks back. For his age group, He has reached his milestones, he’s able to respond to a question in baby jargon, makes sounds and attempts to say words

    Video #3
In the video the area of language the children are demonstrating is listening, speaking, and reading. They are demonstrating phonology as they speak and pronounce different words. They are also demonstrating morphology and Syntax because they are able to use nouns, verbs etc to form simple sentences using words. They are also demonstrating pragmatics as they take turns in conversations with the teacher. The language skills that they are demonstrating is receptive language as well as expressive language. For their communication skills they are able to concentrate, look at the teacher while she reads to them, take turns while communicating as well as initiate it. For their age group milestones, they have showed that they can read, form sentences and listen.

    1. Denise Newland Stewart

I support your thought Taina in video 1. I was taught to remember semantic by say “words have different meaning to different people”. As you said, the child was drawing and not talking and we looking at her work could not tell what she was doing, however, she knew what she was doing and continued.

    Video #1:
The girl is drawing circles on a white board in different colors. She is using literacy skills and processes by drawing on the board or pretend writing. I would say the only thing she’s using is pragmatics because in her mind those circles can mean something other than just scribbling on a white board. She was doing a lot of non-verbal communication, with her facial expressions and movements when her classmates made noises or she realized the person recording her.

    Video #2:
In this video the toddler is having sort of a back and forth conversation with his mother. In his mind he is actively communicating with his mother because of her responsiveness. The toddler is mainly using communication skills and processes with some expressive language skills and processes and receptive language skills and processes. I say mainly communication skills and processes because he is using sounds and vocalizations, facial expressions, eye contact, maintaining conversation for a little, and is even waiting his turn when communicating. He allows his mother to talk during the conversation making it clear that they are having a back and forth. He is looking at her when he speaks kind of in a way to make sure she’s listening and engaged. He’s even using his hands in some parts while he talks. With expressive language skills and processes he is babbling and with receptive he is responding to sounds. I would say his is using phonology in a sense because he is trying to take sounds and arrange them to make a word. The milestones he reached were making sounds with changes in tone and tried to say words she said. In the very beginning of the video it sounds like he was imitating her.

    Video #3:
The teacher Katy is reading a book to her students and is asking them questions in between. I would say the children are using receptive language skills by answering questions, understanding conversations, and comprehending books and stories. The language and communication skills and processes the children are demonstrating in addition are eye contact, responding to sounds, following commands, and laughing. The milestones they’ve achieved are knowing some basic rules of grammar, such as correctly using “he” and “she” and asking questions and providing explanations. I would say they are using all the aspects of language because they are reading and responding in full sentences and they know the meaning of words.

    Video #1: Four years old
The area of language the child is using is writing. Pragmatics is being used because the children are in a social setting. The child is demonstrating non-verbal communication because she is not speaking but she is communicating through her facial expression. I am not sure what language and communication milestones she has achieved because she doesn’t speak.

    Video #2: One year old
The areas of language the child is using is speaking and listening. The child is using phonology, he is making a lot of different sounds as if he is trying to tell a story. The child is demonstrating expressive language because he is using jargon. The language and milestones the child has achieved are making sounds with changes in tones and trying to say words he hears.

    Video #3: Four years old
The areas of language the children are using listening and speaking. The children are using phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics. They are speaking in full sentences and they are able to answer questions the teacher asks. The children are demonstrating communication skills and receptive language. The language and milestones the children achieved are knowing basic rules of grammar, and can ask questions and provide explanations.

Is the child using morphology? How?
Is the child using syntax? How?
Is the child using semantics? How?
Is the child using pragmatics? How?
(Video #1)-The Girl is using phonology because there sounds all around her instead of her responding or having a reaction she draws throughout her observation and that’s how she is expressing herself.
(Video #2)- The baby boy is using Morphology he grouping small letters and sounds to communicate with his mother and create meaning in his head.
(Video #3)- In this observation, all 4 areas of language the children are using because they are studying the sounds of language, studying the smallest groups of letters that together have meaning, studying dreamer of language, and showing how language changes from one social situation yo another.
What language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating? How?
(Video #1)-That she responses to sounds, facial expressions, eye contact, scribbles, and draws
(Video #2)-The baby boy is demonstrating that he can vocalize, he laughs, gestures, body language, movement, takes turns communicating, babbling, words without meaning, responds well, and answers questions.
(Video #3)-Response to sound, understanding the language , answer questions, and comprehending books and stories.
What language and communication milestones have the child achieved for their age?
(Video # 1)-she aware of her surroundings and that she can draw things and is able to pick up markers on her own and focus on what she is doing.
(Video #2)-The miles are he responds by making noises, strings vowels together, and tried to say words his mother was saying.
(Video #3)-Naming similar things, talking well enough, says words, points to things in the book, and say serval single words.

    Video 1)
Which of the 4 areas of language is the child using? The child I observed was the child most seen in the video the female child on the whiteboard. She displays nonverbal communication and her literacy process skills she was able to use the whiteboard to draw different circles in different colors. She did not respond to sound or the moving children around her. The child was using phonology through writing. The language and communication milestone that she has reached for a 4 year old is unknown because she did not respond to sounds, a question, or used any speech or gestures she simply wrote circles and it was not clear if it was O’s or why she was writing them. We simply know she has the capability to write.

    Video 2)
Which of the 4 areas of language is the child using?
This child is using pragmatics. The baby boy is vocalizing and making sounds and pointing as a response. He is capable of saying the word yeah but does not comprehend what yeah is he is just repeating as a response to the female in the video. The language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating by making sounds and saying yeah without meaning. The language and communication milestones has the child achieved for their age is that he is trying to say the words the female is saying.

    Video 3)
Which of the 4 areas of language is the child using?
The area of language the children are using is pragmatics. The teacher is doing a group reading in which the students were able to communicate by finishing sentences, answering questions, repeating the teacher’s words. The language skills they posses are repetitive and expressive language. The language and communication milestones they have reached is the ability to point to things and pictures while naming them, repeating words in a conversation, and naming familiar things.

  15. Kimberlyn Campos

Which of the 4 areas of language is the child using?
-Video #1: The child is using syntax.
-Video #2: The child in this video is using phonology.
-Video #3: The children are using communication skills.

Is the child using phonology? How?
-The child is using phonology in video #2 . The kid is trying to communicate with his mom by making sounds and he also repeat words that his mother says. Also, we can see a non-verbal communication as well. (Language skills & processes).

Is the child using morphology? How?
-The child uses morphology In video #3. The teacher is reading the kids a book, she asks questions and they answer base on the book.

Is the child using syntax? How?
-The child uses syntax in video #1. We can see how the kid is drawing in the board as if is making a sentence.

Is the child using semantics? How?
-In video #3 we see the teacher teaching them words that are from the book she’s reading to them, so they can have a better understanding of the book.

Is the child using pragmatics? How?
    – Video #3 uses pragmatic. Kids are using different body expression while they talk with their teacher. They different ways to communicate to their teacher too.

What language and communication skills and processes is the child demonstrating? How?
-Video#1 :Non-verbal communication. She’s drawing and making eye contact.
-Video #2: Verbal communication. The baby is try to speak with his mother so his making sounds and tries to repeat words his mother is saying.
-Video #3: Communication skills: Kids are raising their hands to answer questions and hey also initiate a conversation with their teacher abut the book they are reading.

    1. Luis Martinez

      Hey Kimberly Campos
Great job,the students did participated actively throughout the entire read aloud, the students were able to identify the names of the objects that were point out by the teacher as she read the book, as well the students use body language( arms and hands) to give the words the meaning.

  16. Luis Martinez

    Video # 1 4-year-old

In the observation, the 4-year-old child did not spoke throughout the entire observation (Non-verbal communication). according to the descriptions of non-verbal communication, the 4-year-old communicated through using body language and movements. For example, after she finished a part of her drawing, she used her hands to close the marker, then she turned to the right waiting, giving the impression that she needed a different color marker. Moving one of the four areas of language the 4-year-old falls into the receptive language, because she was able to draw circles, and identify shapes. The four-year-old child used pragmatics by using body language, she turned around and stretched her hand to get new markers, however the teacher did used pragmatics to communicate with her student. The four-year-old was able to identify shapes by drawing circles, the top drawing showed that she was able to recognize patters, she arranged the circles by color.

    Video #2 1 year old

Based on the observation, Christian did spoke throughout the video by responding to simple questions, Christian falls into the expressive language category because he was able to maintain a conversation between him and her mother, he reply back to her mother’s questions by cooing, I noticed at the beginning of the video Christian imitated her mother’s response, which was the first question. Basically, Christian repeated words that her mother said at the beginning. In addition, Cristian and her mother took turns when they communicate with one another. Christian made eye contact throughout the conversation, he raised his head as he heard questions and responses from her mother. Christian walked around alone without support, Christian used phonology to respond to simple spoken requests (Mother), he expressed simple hand gestures to point object and smile to show enjoyment.

    Video #3 4 year –old

In the observation, Jacob, Jasmin, Stacy and Robert and among other students participated actively in the read-aloud activity. During the read-aloud, the students were able to recognize illustrations as they were point out by the teacher, the students acquired and mastered a lot of the communication skills, the made eye contact as they read words aloud, for example all the students at the same time said “the handkerchief” along with a smile on their faces. Another example, Stacy was able to tell the purpose of the handkerchief, Robert along with classmates used their arms and hands to create movement, for instance they use their hands to represent scissors cutting, and then they use their arms to represent a needle. Jacob, Jasmin, Stacy, Robert, and their fellow classmates used semantics because they gave meaning to the words that they read aloud, they used their arms and hands to show how does a scissor and a needle works. As well the teacher spoke with a lively tone to show to give the words meaning, basically associating sounds with words.

    Video #1
The child is nonverbal in the video. The child is using phonology through her writing she is also drawing shapes such as circles. I did not observe any language or speech milestones since she did not talk in the video.

    Video #2
The child is using pragmatics. He is babbling and making sounds, and repeats the word “yeah”. The milestone he has reached is attempting to mimic sounds.

    Video #3
The children are using communication skills. Children are asking questions and communicating with the teacher. They understand the meaning of things and words connected to them.

    video #1.
4 years old girl is demonstrating literacy skills @ processes. She is using the area language to write and shows pragmatics by using non-verbal communication. For her age, she can achieve language and communication milestones, such as storytelling, singing, saying her first and last name and asking questions and/or answering them with providing explanations.

    Video #2.
One years old boy is demonstrating expressive language skills such as babbling and jargon and communication skills and processes such as eye contact. He is using phonology area, which studies how language groups sound together. At this age, a kid can achieve language and communication development milestones such as using simple gestures like shaking head “ no” or waving “bye-bye”, making sounds with changes in tone (sounds more like speech), say “mama” and “dada” and exclamations like “uh-oh”.
