In this module i learned about the 8 sensory systems and how each one functions and plays a role in a child’s development. I also learned that the sensory system impacts development because if there’s a problem with sensory it can affect the child. Also that everything needs to be broken down so a child can fully understand the steps to a self help skill.

In this module I learned about different sensories that I found pretty amazing and how much we need all of them to be able to be health and always to keep going. I also got to understand that sensory is a big then if one sensory isn’t working for you it can then affect your future child.

In this module I learned about sensory and how important each one are. Each sensory functions plays a great role in a child’s life in other to have good development. Every stage of sensory needs to be broken down so the child can understand each steps. This class so far has thought me so much. I will use these sensory skill on my niece and nephew and have them practice each self-help skills.

In this module I learned about the 8 sensory systems, why each are important to a child’s development and about what self-help skills are. The sensory systems was very interesting to me because I never heard of a few of the ones mentioned in the video. The proprioception, vestibular, and interception systems are all very new to me and quite interesting. Each of these sensory systems are just as important as the last one to a child’s development, if a child has a problem with one of the systems it can possibly hinder or affect their development. These children just need extra support or assistance. Like younger children when learning self-help skills, they need extra attention or help.

In Module 5 I learned there are over 21 sensory systems but we focus on the bigger ones. I learned new definitions for each and how to properly use its terminology. I was amazed by the new sensory systems we learned about, specially interoception. I thought it was amazing how it affects children differently and how their food consumption is affected depending on the child. Before learning the new systems I knew if a child was not developing one or two it was a big chance in their developmental stages but even more now learning about proprioception, vestibular and interception. Paying close attention and scaffolding children with daily duties helps with developmental milestones.

I believe that working with children requires to be specific and observe every detail in their development in order to support them. I learned from this module how to consider details with more depth while dealing with children. Before I was familiar with the regular sense such as smell, touch, taste, sight, and hear. Now by studying the sensory system I realized that each sense has its terminology, tactile for the touch sense, olfactory which is the sense of smell, oral which is the ability to use our moth to distinguish the world, auditory for the hearing sense, visual for sight sense. Moreover, to be more detailed while treating children we need to consider proprioception it is related to the body communication, vestibular it is the ability to move, interoception is it the internal feeling and needs. All these senses will aid us as a teacher to determine whether a child having a normal milestone development or not because the deficiency in any of these senses could affect the development of the child. Furthermore, I learned how to support child by teaching them self-help skills which is called also Activities Daily Living ADL, such as feeding, dressing, hygiene & toilet, and daily chore. I learned that focusing on these activities will contribute greatly in the normal development of child.

In this module I learned about our basic sensory systems which are tactile, olfactory, oral, auditory, visual, proprioception, vestibular, and interception. Each sensory system has a different function which helps us navigate our surroundings, discover new things and develop. I learned that when a sensory of a child is off track or not working properly it could have great impact on the child’s development and health. In this module I also learned about self-help skills, which are activities in which do everyday. It is important to let a child try things independently and give time. I learned how to teach self-help skills properly by being as descriptive as possible.

In this module I learned about our basic sensory systems and how there are three additional ones that i wasn’t really aware of or considered and one. Each sensory system has a different function that helps us with our surroundings (allows us to be aware and determine if we are in danger or not) , discover new things and develop our mentality and help us grow. if a child isn’t able to complete these sensors its either because they are a bit delayed and later will be able to do or tit has impacted on the child’s development and health and they have health issues of some kind.

    Answer:

In this module I learned about the 8 sensory systems Tactile Olfactory Gustatory Auditory Visual Proprioception Vestibular Interoception. How they help children with their fine and gross motors. Also how each sensory system has a different function which helps the children even myself navigate surroundings, discover new things and development. The things that I did observe in this module is you must be super visual and take notes on your children to see their improvements. I can use this information in the healthcare world and see if my patients are meeting the expectations for their age group , do they know their self skills ? help them and guide them to understand their skills

I learned how to be prepared for when I get my assignments time. I learned techniques for being on time and doing my work. I learned how to treat children and how to take care of them. Also, what I should do to interact with the kids. I now know how to teach other children self-skills like taking care of your hygiene. When I used to work with kids, we always used to teach children how to maintain hygiene. We were always telling them to wash their hands after using the bathroom or when they are coming in from outside. I did not know this was called self-skills. I feel like teaching different steps is a good way of teaching somebody because it helps someone to understand and is a great opportunity to teach little ones how to be clean for the future.

In this module, I learned about the 8 basic sensory systems before I only knew about the basic 5 ( touch, smell, hearing, sight, and taste. I now understand why senses play a huge role in child development. I also learned that some children’s sensory systems may be over-responsive or under-responsive. This module will help me give better instruction for self-help skills. I would also be able to determine if a child’s sensory system is properly functioning or if it may be over-responsive or under-responsive.

In this module, I learned eight basic sensory systems and how it is important for infants- toddlers (0-36 months), preschool age children (3-5 years old), and young school age children (kindergarten to 2nd grade) because sensory systems impact children development. These sensory systems can affect every child’s health and development. This module helps me a lot with information on how to determine children’s health and development skills.

  13. Taina

This module has taught me that there are more than 4 sensory systems. There are actually 8 sensory systems that were explained in debt and its importance. These sensory systems play a Huge role in child development because it allows them to develop in language, cognitively, and their fine and gross motor skills. Without these sensory systems, a child could possible have a delay. I also learned the importance of taking the time to teach children self help skills, based on their age and milestones and taking the time to break down these steps so they can grasp the concept.

    1. What did you learn in this module?
-I learn from this module new skills and new methods to use in classroom. From assignment #1 I learned about our basic sensory systems and how each system works and how we use it.From assignment # 2 I learned what self help skill are and the 4 main type.
2.How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with young children?
-This material from this module will help you better prepare to work with young children now I know to better improve and help young children develop there basic sensory system and also know that I can best teach self skills with clear instructions, appropiate support, multiple opportunities and planning and that’s something I will plan to do with my students.

In this module, I learned about more of our sensory systems that I did not know of before. I always knew about the five senses but nothing more in-depth of that. It is important to know this information from this module in order to help our students inside and outside of our classrooms. If we can early detect any complications in their sensory system we can assist them with their development and get them the help that they need.

  16. Kimberlyn Campos

What did you learn in this module?
-I learned about our sensory systems. I thought it was only 5 but I learned about 3 others that I didn’t know about. It’s very important to know about the each system and in what part of our body works.

How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with young children?
-The material from this module prepares me to work with young children by teaching them the sensory system in the most simplest way and fun way. Also, kids can learn self skills by making educational fun games so they can memorize it an use it in their daily basis.

In this module we learned about 8 sensory systems. We learned about the Tactile, Olfactory, Oral, Auditory, Visual, Proprioception, Vestibular and Interoception sensory systems. Sensory systems are very important for children’s development. Their sensories give them the ability to make sense of the world and their surroundings. When there is a delay in any of these sensories, it can interfere in the learning and quality of life of the child. It is important we pay attention to signs of delay a children may be going through and act fast. Let’s say a child’s hearing is problematic and we don’t support the child quickly with this matter, he/she could probably have speech, language and communication delays a result. It is our responsibility as educators to pay attention to these signs and give the child the support they need. Something new I took of these module is that our body has more than 5 senses. Although we learned about 8 specific sensorial systems, there are a lot more that I am still not aware of and would be interested in learning about. Through this module I gained more tools to understand better a child when observing their behavior. If a child consistently bumps into things or puts thing in his/her mouth I will have a different perspective and wouldn’t just assume it maybe bad habits actions but rather sensory matters.

    Module 5 Assignment #3: Self-Assessment

I take life for granted and just wake up and move about without thinking that the activates I perform are known as self-care or Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s). This lesson also allows me to know that children at certain age should be displaying some types of self-help skills. I will be more observant to see how the different age group of children, perform those skills whenever I see them.

This module will help me to work with children by encouraging them to complete tasks independently and if they have not mastered the task, offer some assistance or model the correct way and let them follow. Also praising them and motivating them to do their best. Likewise, never to forget that children learn differently, and some will require more help and patience than others.

What did you learn in this module?
In this module I learned about our sensory systems such as the tactile commonly refer as touch, followed by the olfactory, commonly known as the smell, the auditory commonly known as hearing, followed by gustatory commonly known as oral, moving on the next is visual commonly known as sight, followed by vestibular, commonly known as balance, each of these sensors have special functions that allows us to complete challenges/activities that we encounter every day. Last but not least, is the proprioceptive commonly known as body awareness. Surprisingly there are more than 5 of our sensory system that I was not aware of until now. Our 8 senses help us process the information that we received from our surroundings through smell, touch, hear, see, taste, balance that way we interact with our environment, and body awareness the way we react and respond to our surroundings, basically it’s the body’s ability to make sense of the world. One of the things that caught my attention in this module, was that from birth to early childhood, children use their five senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them, Now I understand why infant/toddlers the minute they start to crawl or walk, they are actively exploring their surroundings by touching, tasting, smelling any kind of object that they find on their way, basically they are little scientist experimenting with objects. The material from this module prepares me to work with young children by teaching them the sensory system through the integration of sensory play in the classroom for example, Sensory play for toddlers, observing light and shadow made by torch light on objects of different shapes or sizes, or as well watching the colors mix and the patterns form by finger painting or sponge painting (child-safe paint).Overall, this class so far has thought a lot, now every time when I see my little sister playing or doing an activity I would wonder what sensory is she using now?.

In this module I learned about the sensory system. I honestly had no clue we had 8 and 5 senses! Our sense all affect how we learn things and how we do things everyday. I also learned about self help skills and how breaking down a skill is easier for a child to learn step by step.
The material I learned in this module will help me to assist the children I take care of on a daily basis as they learn to do things independently. I know now that through their senses not only do the children learn but those senses help children developmentally.
