Module 4 Assignment #4: Self Assessment (6/4-6/7)

At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 110 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).

  • What did you learn in this module?
    • Information/ knowledge
    • Skills
    • Insights (connections you made or “ah-ha’s” you had about the material)
  • How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with young children?

I learned the different languages that children develop. They use different types of languages to communicate. The skills that I gained is how to communicate with the kids. For example, using my body language so they understand better. This video reminded me of being in the classroom because of my experience. I learned that when you work in the classroom, you should already know how to communicate with the child in case the child wanted to communicate with another child. This module is helping me to communicate with kids such as through drawing, speaking, and playing. By understanding a child’s body language, I know if they want to share and play with another child. Drawing and playing can help them build muscles for their body language.

I learned that there is different languages that children develop through out life. Each one plays an important role. I’ve learned how to incorporate the five senses into my observations. That each observation should be extremely thorough. Each language development teaches a child how to communicate and interact with one another. In this module I also learned how to identify language development. which is by encouraging a child to communicate, weather if its with parents , teacher or other children. It plays a major role in each child’s milestones.

I learned that there are different languages that children develop from infant through lifespan. Each development in a child’s life is very important. I learned communicate with a child is important and the different ways you communicate helps a lot. I will use this information I learn to communicate with my son.

In Module 4 I learned the different stages of language, writing, drawing. What the stages and skills means in all the stages in a child’s development. How language starts in an early age like crying, which i loved to learn!! The milestones that should be met during situations. Being flexible with situations and having an open mind when thinking of way to help the children reach milestones . Be able to observe the children in different settings and be able to know how to help them and which aspect of language to help them with. Know which stage they are in and how to help them to get to the next milestone. Be sensitive to the child’s home culture and background and try to be open about finding way to help the family and child.

Answer: In this module I learned about language development and also different types of languages such phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and how different children express themselves and how at they should be at a certain age with the languages, and also what they should be able to do at that certain age. I also learned the difference between the/3 languages as well. Most importantly I learned how teachers or anyone who is working with children to really encourage children to be out spoken and do activities that focus on speaking and listening so children can work on their gross and fine motor skills. The things that I did observe in this module is you must be super vocal and take notes on your children to see their improvements. I can use this information in the healthcare world and see if my patients are meeting the expectations for their age group , are they speaking well ? Do they know how to speak on things if they need help ? Do they know differences between words and colors ? Etc.

As we are continuing collecting knowledge about children. This module 4 provides information about language and communication development. I learned different theories of language development through reading material. Nativistic theory by Chomsky, Behaviorist by Skinner, Semantic pragmatic by J. Piaget and Social-Pragmatic by Vygotsky. I also learned that language has different area such as phonology: study of the sound , morphology: the study of the group of letter that have a meaning(word), syntax the rule of the order of the sentence, semantic acquire relationship between word and pragmatic acquisition of the language and have the ability to use it in social interaction. This module had permitted to exert my observation skills as we observe children through videos. Moreover, I learned strategies how I could support children to develop their language communication. I learned that children could express their needs, feeling, and thought in different ways by verbal or no verbal communication and they develop their language by boosting their receptive and expressive skills.

Module 4 has taught me the different theories of language and how psychologists saw the development of language. I also learned about the areas and components of language and what they each focus on as well as learning how to determine when each one is being demonstrated. I was also able to use the knowledge I learned in this module and be creative with activities that can help develop a child’s language and communication skills. Being able to observe and know what to look for, so that I can incorporate specific activities to teach them how to communicate with others and express themselves.

I learned language SKills & Processes. There are four types of Language & Communications Skills & processes. These are Literacy skills & processes, Receptive Language Skills & processes, Expressive Language skills & Processes and Communication Skills & processes.I learned the stages of Child’s development. And also, I learned what is the relationship between Child’s language development and child’s Toys.

Module 4 has taught me about language and the different aspects about language. It taught me to observe how children learn a language and what forms of communication children use to express themselves at different stages of their life. This helps me as a teacher because I can implement this in my lessons and help children develop their language and communication skills based on my observations and be more inclusive in my planning.

      Hey Arelis Marie Elias
This is Luis Martinez, your reflection was well structure I want to add on that children undergo different stages as they grow physically and emotionally so it’s important that educators integrate materials where children put to work their fine and gross motor skills, through building, exploring, coloring, observations ,and enhancing problem solving skills.

In this module I learned about the five components and four areas of language. I also learned about the different theories of language development. This module taught me ways I can help children develop language. I gained more observation skills, I am now able to observe children and learn about their language development by hearing them talk and play. One thing I found really interesting is that babies babble sounds in all languages for the first six months of their lives, then they begin to only do sounds of the language their parents speak. I will be able to use this information when working with young children by observing them while they speak and being able to understand where they are developmentally with language skills. I would also be able to create activities that will boost the children’s language skills.

What did you learn in this module?
I learn so many new things from this module. From assignment #1 I learned what language truly is the components, how a child learns a language and the ways and forms they can, and I can as a future teacher support students in language development. From assignment # 2 I learned how to identify the language a child is using, From assignment # 4 I learn how the materials in a classroom can develop skills not only language but in many other stages in a child’s life.
How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with young children?
The material from this module better prepares me to work with young children because now I know the components of language and how to teach children so they can learn a language or even how to express themselves in many forms. Lastly, I know now how to support children no matter what age or what stage of development they are in how to express themselves I know how to speak to them, what activities to create, and how to react to situations.

In module 4 I learned about the language development in children, how their language develops, how we as teachers can support language development, and some theories that focus on language development. The part where I made the most connections was definitely reading about the theories. I found myself thinking about my personal growth, the people I know, or the children I am around. While I agreed with some parts of all the theories Vygotsky’s social-pragmatic theory and B.F. Skinner’s behavioral theory were the two theories that I most felt connected to. I had examples in my actual life of both theories being proven in a way. In this module I also learned about the different language and communication skills and processes and the 4 categories. This is one of the things that I knew about before but didn’t have an actual name for them. Another connection I made was with the 5 components of language which is something i learned in my Foundations & Process of Reading Acquisition class.

    Module 4 Assignment #4: Self-Assessment

This module taught me the different ways that children at different age develop their language skills. This unit again reminds us that not all children develop their language skills at the same time or pace, and they need different strategies to help them build their skills. As a teacher, I should be mindful of how my students learn and remember that one method/lesson/approach will not work for every unique child. Again, toys and activities are important in helping children to develop their language skills. Having a clearer understanding of the language development skills and processes and the language development milestone, all play an important role.
Normally, under general communication I would not use expressive and receptive language under a different heading, however, under language development, it is separated, likewise, literacy skills.
I will relate to each child differently knowing that language development skills and processes differs among students. Though this content relates to 0-8 years old, I will now have a more open mind/better understanding of how students express themselves overall.

-In this module I learned the different types of communication skills in different age in children. After reading and looking at videos in this module, we can see how important is for an adult to teach their kids about the different ways of communication. Also, I learned about the different areas in language and now I can tell the difference by just looking at a child communication skill. With these different language development we can know more kids and have an easier interaction with them.

    ECE 110-Self Assessment

In module 4 I acquired a lot of different ways on how to properly approach to different situation when I’m presented with challenging situations(different age levels and grade level) in the classroom, I also learned that there are different methods/materials on how to enhance a child’s communication and language development, children undergo different stages as they grow physically and emotionally so it’s important that educators integrate materials where children put to work their fine and gross motor skills, through building, exploring, coloring, observations ,and enhancing problem solving skills. I’ve learned how to incorporate/add the five senses into my observation papers, basically from what I’ve learned from each module I try to add information on the observation papers. The videos provided enriched information about what led the children do this and what action will he/she take next, also what actions did the child performed throughout the observation. Each stage of language development shows whether the child has reached it (benchmark)or has not, it shows what areas has she/he possibly mastered. Overall, this module taught me how to be culturally sensitive when it comes to knowing a child’s culture, as a future educator it is important because this is the way to build trust and bonding with parents , familiarizing with the ways the child communicates with his parents.

In this module is leathered a lot about language, the different types or languages and theories of how language is learned. I also learned how to identify the milestones that children are using when it comes to language and way or toys to help improve and develop language in different age groups.

In this module I learned the different languages that children develop. I learned how to use different types of languages to communicate such as phonology (that studies the sounds of a language), morphology ( that studies the smaller group of letters that together have a meaning), syntax (is the study of the grammar of a language), semantic (how language conveys meaning) and pragmatic (how language changes from one social situation to another). Until now, I did not know how important each game is for a child’s development. How many skills can be generated from each game. The exercise “Materials to support language and communication” was a-ha for me, because I have not thought about such a skill before

What did you learn in this module?
In this module I learned that there are many ways to help children develop language and communication skills. I really had no clue language was broken down into different parts. Its really interesting to see how a child’s language and communication changes as they grow. I myself realized after this module how its super important to make sure I am consistently using language throughout the day so that the children in my care can then use what they hear and how I communicate myself to better learn to communicate with me but with their peers and classmates as well.
