Module 1 Assignment #5: Self-Reflection (5/26-5/27)

At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 110 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private — go to Blackboard for ECE 110-Lecture, to the Assignments section on the left to find the Self-Assessment Journal).

In this module I learned how to make proper observations of children without creating any bias on them. The observations are meant to reflect on what the child is lacking or has mastered and not on personal beliefs. The things I observe must strictly be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic that way they are the most accurate. I can use this information to be a more responsive teacher and to implement the observations to incorporate them in my lessons to better help my students.

In this module I learned how to make observations on young children without assuming what type of person they are. Observations are meant to observe on what the child lacks’ in areas which could be in manners, sharing with others, emotions, etc or it can be what he/she is sufficient in. The things that I did observe in this module is you must be aural, visual, and open minded. I can use this information in the healthcare world and be more conscious and understanding of the patients and their families when they do come into my unit.

What I have taken away from Module 1 is the deeper insight to observing a child, and the many ways we can do so. What really stood out is that we are so quick to try to draw a conclusion when observing someone and that leads to us not being as open minded as we should be during this time. Looking for the facts and only stating the facts is so important, just as important as not letting your opinions make your decisions, this is when objective and subjective occur. Also, observing a child more than once in different settings, and asking teachers or family members for more details to better understand the child.

I learned that observing young children is very important for people who want to study ECE. Collect the student details, watch their emotion and body language are the skills and insights for this module. I can use this information to be a good teacher to work with young children.

In this module I first learned techniques for how to affectively prepare for this online class and do my best. Planning ahead, writing things down, and keeping reminders can all help with time management. I also learned about child observations, why we do observations, and how to become a skilled observer. As a teacher observing your students is important for you to get to know them truly and can make for better relationships. It can also give you some insight on how how a student acts or what they are missing so you can then help them in a way that is effective. Observations are also used to measure the progress of a child. The material from this module did help me understand how to be less subjective when doing these observations. It’s important to be objective with things like this, you don’t want personal biases to influence your decisions.

In this module I learned how to properly observe children objectively. I learned how observations help us in learning about each child, to asses a child’s progress and become more of a responsive teacher. Reading some of this modules information really made me think of how I run my infant room and how sometimes we do fly through the day making sure our babies are okay instead of actually enjoying all that the children in our care could teach us about themselves just by watching and observing them.

In this module i learned how to make proper observations. i learned how to give a detailed description on children photo graphs. observations are meant to show what a child is lacking . it also for what a child has accomplish . i learned to be more open minded in my observations, me personally because ive been in this field for a few years. ive learned to be more visual and attentive. I can and will use these techniques in the future when i am a teacher.

In this module I learned how important it is to do observations and not assuming certain things. When you observe you will get a better understanding on what a child lacks in certain area. Taking notes and pay attention will help you to be a good observer. You also have to be open minded. I can use this information with my son, instead of me assuming I will observe him more and get a better understand so I could know his feeling.

What did you learn in this module?
I learn from this modules so many things. From assignment #1 I learn that my peers and I all have differ t perspective on things but we also have many of the same goals and many of us share the same concerns. From assignment #3 I learn every I need to know to be successful in this class. In assignment # 2 I learn more about open lab and now my professor knows how to contact me also I learn what I’m going to do To keep up with work in class and how to better manage my time so I know when assignment our due and what’s everything I should do to keep with class and learn some tips from a YouTube video the professor shared. From assignment #4 I learn how important descriptions are and what it means to be an observer and exactly what to look for and exactly what to do.
How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with young children.
-This material will help me prepare to work with young children because I will be aware and observing of what a child does, what the child is more interested in,what attracts the child to things and why, the way a child interacts with others and lastly always pay attention because there’s so many ways to learn new things and listen to other having different perspectives helps out in so many ways.

What did you learn in this module?

In module 1 I learned to navigate through open lab properly and learned about different techniques that may help me be effective this semester and going forward. I also learned what techniques worked for my classmates as well. Getting deeper into the module I learned how to observe children, why we observe children, the qualities of being a good observer, the difference between objective and subjective and why I should want to be an objective observer. I also did my first observation where I practiced what I learned during this module. This module will help me going forward while working with children because it guided me through the foundations and taught me the basics and gave great examples. Using these resources and applying them through practice will help mold me to be better.

      Hey Taina
This is Luis Martinez, great job at expressing your thoughts and ideas on how to become an effective observer for early childhood education. I totally agree with you on that the sources provided by our professor are very helpful and very organize in a way that it makes it effective for us to understand.

Overall, in module 1 (1-5), I learned the insights of how to properly document child observations in any educational setting within early childhood education. From what I learned from the PowerPoint on child observation, is that educators should of avoid creating any bias/perceptions on any particular child, it’s important to remember that every child is unique and deserves to be treated with respect. Becoming a proficient observer takes time and practice, it works like a muscle that develops overtime. Another takeaway from learning on how to conduct an efficient observation is that the observer takes good notes, documenting every detail that the child does or how she/he behaves around his classmates. Insight observations must be objective as possible, because this serves as proof or a record that can be shared with family members, colleagues and other professionals working with children. The things I’m looking forward when working on a classroom would be assess the child’s progress, learning and abilities to better understand if they master the content of an specific subject, have they achieved what we expected or hope for.

In this module I learned that when we observe children, we have to think and write objective. We have to write exactly what we see infront of us. We are observing and writing subjectively when we allow our personal beliefs and bias influence what we think about the child and how we describe the child’s actions. I really enjoy assignment #4 the exercise where we were told to draw a picture of person carrying a baby. It made me think that just like we adult think and interpret things differently, children are the same. They see and interpret things differently from one another. This also gives teachers an insight of the child’s personality, feelings and ways of thinking.

What I take from this module is being more careful with the words I use when describing a child. Knowing the difference between objective and subjective makes one observe and write notes in a more careful manner. It’s easier said than done. This is something that I could only get better with practice. Just how adults interpret things differently, children do the same. If we looked into detail what children draw, say or do, we are able to get an insight of the child’s personality, feelings and ways of thinking.

  15. Camila Polo

In module 1 I learned how to properly observe children. It is important to properly observe a child in order to gain insight about the child, also to assess progress and learning and to document experiences. In order to be a good observer, it takes practice, you must also pay close attention, stay focuses and take notes. Some insights I had during this module is that a lot of the observations I initially make are bias, for example when I was observing the pictures, I was tempted to say that the girl was happy in picture number 1. I realized that that is bias, she might be excited or being tickled. I realized that that was my interpretation and not a proper unbiased observation. This material will help me be a better observer in the future which will help me be bias when documenting progress of a child or gain insight.

    1. Luis Martinez

      Hey Camila Polo
This is Luis Martinez,I totally agree with you that as future educators we must avoid making bias perceptions on a child instead we should record objective observation as possible so that we can gain deeper insights about the child. When I was observing the pictures I was also as well tempted to just go on my beliefs and perceptions about how the child is feeling or what caused him/her to react that way.

  16. Yasmina Nait Slimane

I learned from this module that work with children needs to be a good observer in order to gain a better understanding for their behavior and reactions. This technique will help me in the future as a teacher to provide a good treating and help for each child.
I liked the example given by my professor when she said that developing observation like working a mussel. I started to work my observation and improve it in order to be more objective and ovoid bias.

  17. Denise Newland Stewart

I learned from the module how to navigate my way through this new teaching and learning medium and I am much more flexible now. I learned about the course requirements and deadlines. Learning about the importance of keen unbiased, no judgmental, objective, observation is very important in learning how to effectively facilitate our students, regardless of their class level. I am reminded of the importance of documenting exactly what we see, knowing that this is vital in facilitating learning and other needs of our students. I will have to do much better with my observing skills, considering I will know so much more about my students.

I am now forced to use observation quite often not only to some students, especially the ones who misbehave, but to all students, knowing that I will learn much more about them. This will enable me to plan my lessons and activities more to their needs. I often start off with a book to record behavior, grades temporarily, and other day to day classroom activities. However, I seldomly use it continuously. Moving forward, it will be used much more because I will mostly record what I observe from my students. This also will minimize students accusing teachers of saying or doing things that they are not in agreement with, because most times teachers assume or judgmental. So, I will try to be more objective with my students moving forward. Students will respect our actions more when we can have incidences or concerns documented based of observation and can be related to date and time, this should quench some fires.

In the module #1 I learned how observing a child is important especially paying attention to keen details. normally i would over look an image and try to focus on the bigger picture rather than paying attention the the background trying to decipher what the image is really trying to show. you shouldn’t put to much of your own personal input as you are trying to create a visualization for the reader and not prove a point whether the child was wrong in a situation or not.I can now use these tips to better myself as a parent and a teacher for the now and future.

  19. Camila Polo

Module number two taught me many skills that will help me work with young children. I learned about the prenatal period and why it is important for the development of the child. I also learned that it is crucial to manage stress while being pregnant. In module two assignment three I learned that trust and attachment to the caregiver is something that I must develop in order to be a good caregiver to any child. A connection to me that was surprising is that when a child trust you, it helps with the learning because they feel safe in the environment that they are in. That to me was shocking and very important information. Finally, I learned skills that I need in order to offer quality care such as responsive care, base care, individualize curriculum etc. I think these skills will prepare me to work with young children. I will implement these skills to create quality care. I will also form attachments and trust between the children and myself so that they learn and develop well.

From the module I learned that you can make good observations on children. The observation play huge part because it helps u understand the child. I observed visually. I can use this information to help me because I can improve my lessons and give a better learning

  21. Gaily

In this module I learned how to pay attention to detail especially when it comes to children behaviors and their interest. I found myself observing the clothes, background, and their body language. I also learned how to submit and reply to my classmates post because I had a few issues prior to submitting. I also learned that I can reach out to my Proffersor in case I experience any issues . In this module I also learned that online class are not as I expected.

In this module I learned what it means to observe a child objectively. Because the action of a child can be understood only through objective observation. The real discovery for me was the observation videos and I really liked them. I learned what it means to describe a situation without a personal attitude, which will help me a lot in my relationship with children in the future.

  23. Kimberlyn Campos

In this module I learn the different observation of a kid because people can see a behavior of a kid and interpreted in a different way without observing the kid closely. Also, I learned skills that are basic in other to stat working with children.
