Although I saw moonlight, I watched it again attentively to get a better understanding of the movie based on my own perspective. The movie is about a young man’s development in an environment that doesn’t suit his identity. Living in a drug infested neighborhood with his addict mother and no parental guidance, Chiron is forced into parentification to survive.
- I would follow my conscience: Chiron was a child with no guidance taking in by Juan. Juan the neighborhood drug dealer became a father figure in his life, giving him safety and stability, he needed.
- I don’t know what I would do: Having autonomy at such a young age, Black (Chiron) walked the path that was laid out for him. Because his father figure was a drug dealer, he eventually became one as well.
- I would do whatever would improve my own situation: Black would spend nights at Juan and Theresa house, they provided a safe haven for him. He went to juvie as a teenager, when he was release, he decided to sell drugs because of lack of education and experience.
- I Would Do What God or the Scriptures Say Is Right:
- I Would Do Whatever Made Me Happy: As a teen Black (Chiron) was confused about his identity. Because he wasn’t aggressive or tough like the neighborhood kids, he was bullied for being different. Although, he had his first experience with his friend Kevin, they both were afraid to openly embrace they feelings for each other because being gay wasn’t culturally norm at that time.
- I would follow the advice of an authority figure: As a child Chiron shared his feelings with Juan about being confused. Although Juan was this big-time drug dealer, he encouraged Chiron to be himself and wait until he is older to understand his feelings. He spent years alone, when Kevin came back into his life Chiron decided to follow his heart.
- I would do what’s best for everyone: Because Black was self sufficient from a young age and no family only his mother and mother figure. He did what he thought was best for him.
