The movie that I watched was Parasite. After watching the movie one of the moral dilemmas that stood out to me was “I would do whatever would improve my own situation”. The Kim family’s living and financial situation were really bad. They had no money and did not live in safe habitable conditions and had low-paying jobs as pizza boxers to meet ends meet. After the son tutored a rich family’s daughter, The Parks, he decided to take advantage of the family by profiting off of their needs and lying about their credentials to have the rest of the Kim family hired. They made sure they would do whatever to improve their own situation even if it meant hurting others in the process. The overall theme of the movie is greed. Following the 7 moral positions based on the movie, this is how I would evaluate them.
- 1) I would follow my conscience
In the movie, they followed their conscience and made the decision to take advantage of the Park family to improve their own situation.
2) I don’t know what I would do
The family ran into trouble when they started to get caught in their lies and have issues with the old maid. In this situation, they made sure they would do anything to protect their secret from coming out even if it was risky and dangerous.
3) I would do whatever would improve my own situation
This was the overall theme of the movie. They made sure they would do whatever to improve their own situation even if they were lying about their credintials.
4) I Would Do What God or the Scriptures Say Is Right
The movie was not religious or did not mention anything about god.
5) I Would Do Whatever Made Me Happy
This fits the overall theme of the movie. After taking advantage of the Park family, they realized how much income they were making and living more lavishly which in turn made them happy, and would do anything to make sure they don’t lose this opportunity.
6) I would follow the advice of an authority figure
In this movie, the father was the mastermind behind a lot of their plans and they followed through as a family even if it meant hurting others.
7) I would do what’s best for everyone
The Kims looked out for each other to improve their own situation.
In my own moral compass, I would also probably have done the same thing to make sure to do what’s best for everyone but not to the extreme lengths to hurt others. I don’t have any desire to take advantage of others but I would want what’s best for all.
