This fallacy gets around the argument by focusing on the origins of something or someone. It’s related to the fallacy of ad hominem. It takes advantage of pre-existing negative impressions to make someone’s argument appear weak without actually offering evidence for why the argument is flawed.
Example: The Commissioner, who was accused of corruption and collecting bribes on the 8 o’clock news, remarked that we should all be skeptical of what we hear in the media since we all know how untrustworthy it can be.
