- Assignment 3. Editorial Opinion
SHAKEE PERKINS EDITORIAL OPINION It’s great to see the city and state of New York , (Queens) in particular, taking action to address the issue of “ghost cars” with fake or defaced license plates. The joint task force sounds like a strong collaboration between various agencies. It’s important to crack down on drivers using fraudulent license plates to avoid paying tolls, tickets, and even participating in criminal activities. The use of technology, including license plate reader technology, seems to be a key part of the enforcement operations. It’s also interesting that the task force is planned to conduct regular enforcement operations to keep a check on these “ghost vehicles.” This initiative is not just about enforcing toll payments, but also about ensuring road safety and preventing potential criminal activities. It’s good to see proactive measures being taken to address this issue for the safety and well-being of everyone. However, Queens has experienced some of the most horrific traffic accidents due to ghost car track downs and police chases. The Traffic stops has been leading to violent crimes for example; A 31-year-old NYPD cop was shot and killed by a career criminal during a traffic stop in Queens on Monday evening in a “senseless act of violence,” officials and law enforcement sources believed the suspect could have harmed other community members if the traffic stop was handled appropriately. In March of 2024, borough representatives and community leaders including my neighbor petitioned the city mayor and governor to reimplement safer practices of the task force crackdown to avoid fatalities in public places. The community of Queens believes the policing tactics, training, and safety measures could be improved and implemented in a way that will cause less damage by using tracking devices that can latch onto a suspect’s vehicle and lead law enforcement officers to an arrest. Another solution is to lower the speed limit on busy streets parkways and highways located in urban and suburban areas.. KNOW THE FACTS Speeding Endangers Everyone on the Road According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2021 there were 328,946 people injured and 12,330 fatalities in speeding-related crashes, 29% of total traffic fatalities for the year and an increase of 8% from 11,428 in 2020, the highest since 2007. In New York State, about 30 percent of all traffic fatalities list speeding as a contributing factor. Proactive and targeted speed enforcement is a method to reverse this trend and reduce deaths and injuries due to crashes. Traffic Safety Forum Formerly known as TrafficStat, this weekly meeting of NYPD personnel focuses on every Patrol Borough’s actions to reduce deaths and serious injuries. Under the leadership of Chief Kim Y. Royster, the Traffic Safety Forum takes a data-driven approach to traffic policing. Police executives explain their personnel deployments and discuss their priorities to ensure resources are targeted on safety. This multifaceted and holistic approach brings together NYPD’s Vision Zero partners as they work toward the ultimate goal of ending deaths and serious injuries in traffic. NYS Traffic Laws
