Extra Credit Event – November 3rd

Careers in the Courts will be held next week, on November 3rd at 5:30pm via Zoom! Students should register in advance to attend at https://bit.ly/3guieumnow.  Panelists who will be speaking to students are: 

Bryn WhittleSenior Counsel to the Attorney General and Director of Community Engagement. She previously served as the Special Assistant to the Attorney General on community engagement and community justice initiatives. Prior to joining the Department of Law and Public Safety, Ms. Whittle was a sole practitioner and served as the Municipal Prosecutor of the Township of West Orange, New Jersey. Earlier in her career, Ms. Whittle was a Senior Staff Attorney with the Community Health Law Project, a statewide legal services organization dedicated to the advocacy and representation of low-income, disabled New Jersey residents, for sixteen years. While there, she was a longtime member of the Advisory Committee on Minority Concerns for the Essex Vicinage and the Dean’s Diversity Council of Seton Hall University School of Law. Ms. Whittle is a graduate of Rutgers University and Seton Hall University School of Law. 

John A. MonteroSenior Court Clerk at the NY County Supreme Court with 17 years experience where he began his career as a certified Spanish interpreter. As a peace officer his tasks involve assisting the judge with the management of a court part, including supervising court staff, court officers, reviewing filings and submissions for compliance, and processing all outgoing court orders. His current assignment is in the integrated domestic violence part, focusing on criminal, matrimonial, and family cases that arise out of domestic violence incidents.

Welcome to Week 8!

Dear students,

We are in the Eighth Week of the Semester. We will be focusing on the contributions of W.E.B. Du Bois in criminology. While he is not customarily identified as a criminologist, many of his writings included discussions about crime. Study the materials in Unit Week 8.

We are a week away from Exam 2. I will post Exam 2 questions by Wednesday. It will be live on Thursday, November 3rd on Blackboard. You will have until November 6th to complete the exam.

If you need assistance with any of the assignments, please don’t hesitate to talk to me. I will have my regular ZOOM office hours on Monday at 1 pm and on Tuesday/Thursday, from 9:45 am to 10:45 am (in my office and on ZOOM). Welcome to Week 7!

Dear students,

We are almost halfway through the semester. This week we will be focusing on psychological theories of crime. Please study the materials in Week 7 Unit. I will spend Tuesday finishing talking about the Biological Roots of Criminology, however.

I am going to take a look at your Step 4 & 5 submissions. It is looking great so far. I will introduce Step 6 next week, I feel. We need some time to process all this. Please don’t forget to bring your laptops as it helps work on the laptop while I give demonstrations. If you have fallen behind, no worries. Submit your work and ask questions if you don’t understand.

WEEK 6

Welcome to Week 6! Bring Your Laptops to Class!

Dear students, this week we will explore the biological roots of criminology. Your study materials are in Week 6 unit. We are moving along our project Steps. I have seen a number of submissions for Step 3 and Step 4. If you have fallen behind, please do get in touch with me! We will be working on Step 5 this week.

Please make sure to bring your laptops/IPADs to class so we can practice getting data for your Step 5s.

If you have to miss class this week, please make sure to see me during my office hours (T/Th, 9:45 am to 10:45 am). I can be available via ZOOM at other times.

Dear students,

We are in Week 5 of our semester. This week, we will focus on the classical school in Criminology, which includes the works of Beccaria and Bentham. I posted Week 5 unit with study materials.

We will only meet once this week, on Thursday, October 6th. I will go over this week’s material on Thursday. Meanwhile, you should work on Step 4 of your project. I will be grading your exams and assignments this week.

Exam 1 and no Class today and October 4th!

This week we will be learning all about social science research. I have placed study materials in Week 4 folder. You should work on Step 3 this week, and I will go over your Step 2 submissions meanwhile.

We will have our regularly scheduled classes this week.

Your first exam is coming up (next week). This exam will be on Blackboard, and it will contain multiple choice and short answer questions. I will post your exam questions by Wednesday of this week as a guide for preparing for your first exam.

Dear students, we are in Week 3 of our course. This week we are exploring crime statistics and trends. We are focusing on official crime statistics from the FBI and the National Crime Victimization Survey. Please study the materials found in Week 3 unit. Don’t forget to submit Step Two of the course project (it was due yesterday). On Thursday, we will have our library instruction (in the regular classroom).
