Dear students,

This is an important email about a required class activity. The course in which you are enrolled is participating in a project funded by the National Science Foundation to improve students’ quantitative literacy skills. As a result of our participation in this initiative, during the semester I am administering two rounds of assessments that focus on quantitative reasoning skills. Your participation in these assessments is a required classroom activity and counts towards attendance/participation. However, you have a choice as to whether or not you want your data to be used for research purposes. Please watch the video here to learn more about this project:

https://tinyurl.com/NSFDARE

In order to receive attendance/class participation credit, you must complete the post-assessment by December 14th. Your participation in these assessments is very important to evaluate the effectiveness of faculty efforts to teach quantitative data analysis. In some classes, students will complete the assessments even if they do not participate in any quantitative literacy activities. In other classes, they will undertake quantitative data analysis.

We ask that you kindly treat the assessments seriously as the results are important for understanding how we can effectively improve our curriculum. Your performance on the assessment has no bearing on your grade in this course and will never be used to evaluate you personally. That said, please try your best, but don’t try to look up answers as that will negatively impact our research.

Meanwhile, you do have the option of deciding whether you want your results to be used for research purposes. Regardless of whether or not you choose to participate in this research, the assessment you complete for class will be the same. However, if you choose to participate in the research, you will be paid $5.00 for your completion of the assessment and you will be asked some additional background questions.

The principal investigators for this project, including Esther Wilder (Lehman College), Rebecca West (Lehman College), and Eduardo Vianna (LaGuardia Community College), would be extremely grateful if you would be willing to allow your data to be used for research. If you choose to do that, the research team will protect the confidentiality of your data. We can only provide compensation ($5) to students who are participants in this research study.

Welcome to Week 12!

Dear students,

This week we will be focusing on control theories. They are quite prominent in modern criminology. We will discuss the old and new versions of control theories.

We are still working on Step 7th. I have seen a number of submissions. I feel that I need to have a meeting with each one of you whether or not you submitted a Step 7. Fill out this survey so we can arrange a time to meet: https://forms.gle/R7UW5h5zmtZQCWWEA

I have office hours today from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Zoom. I also have office hours tomorrow from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. But as I told you last week, with the registration for Spring 2023, I have been busy advising during my office hours. So, use the survey above to let me know when you would like to meet outside of office hours.

See you both days of the week in class!

Welcome to Virtual Week 11! Don’t Come to Class on 11/15 & 11/17

Dear students,

We are in Week 11, and it will take place virtually as I am traveling to my conference. This week we are covering the Social Learning Theories in Criminology. Please review the materials in Week 11th. This is also the time for you to finish working on Step 7 which is due on November 20th. You also have a special assignment for this virtual week. Please remember NOT TO COME TO CLASS ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY.

I will not have any face-to-face office hours on Tuesday and Thursday. Instead, I have office hours on Monday, November 14th, from 12 pm to 3 pm. I will be in my office and on ZOOM: https://bmcc-cuny.zoom.us/j/3772687009

Welcome to Week 10! Meeting at FH-507 on 11/8

Dear students,

The second exam is behind us. I will grade it shortly.

We are in Week 10 of the semester, and the topic for this week is the Social Disorganization Theory which was developed by scholars at the Chicago School. The focus of this theory is on the neighborhoods and communities, rather than persons. Learn all about Social Disorganization Theory in Week 10 unit.

On Tuesday, we are meeting in FH-507 to work on Step 7 (and any other steps you are missing).

Exam 2 is behind us, and I will grade it shortly. If you are missing either one of the short assignments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me for help. I have my office hours today and on Tuesday/Thursday.

I will have my regular office hours today at 1 pm and on Tuesday/Thursday, from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. These days, I am available on ZOOM: https://bmcc-cuny.zoom.us/j/3772687009

I can also meet with you via ZOOM by appointment.
