My experience in this class was great! I learned a lot of new concepts like WCC, Bentham’s Panopticon, social control theories, etc. The readings and videos were very interesting and informing. I was surprised about the Biological Explanations of Criminal Behavior lesson. It was really cool to learn about how the brain shape and features affect the function of a person’s thoughts. The lesson provided deeper evidence and explanations. It changed my perspective on criminals because it showed that not every criminal has a proper brain which results in their actions. This course was one of my favorites because I learned a lot of new things that I never knew before, I got explanations of some of my theories, and it was a very clear and well-structured asynchronous course. I appreciate the extra credit opportunities you provided as well. Thank you Professor!!
Very interesting class, I wish I could’ve taken this class in person ! I really enjoyed the way the class was structured, the extra credit opportunities was for sure a great way for us to better our grades. I have to admit that learning about the mainstream criminology open my eyes to realize why the criminal justice system operates the way it does, penalizing poor and people of color, based on the classic criminologists theories that mostly were racist and classists. I feel like some of the readings specially when it comes to statistics were a little outdated, it would be nice if those readings were more up to date. I am a big fan of critical criminology specially after learning that Marx had a big influence on those theories and the way they approach the roots of crime to try to come up with what causes it instead of just blaming the person who commits the crime. Thank you professor Margaryan for always been available for us when need it, for sure I’m going to miss this class. Happy holidays and Good luck everyone on the finals !!
I really enjoyed this class as I took CRJ 101 and wanted to also take CRJ 102, which im glad I took. This class was well put together, and organized well for us to understand. I really love how we got deep into the conversations and was happy we got to include our own opinion. I liked how we talked about the Chicago school of criminology because we got to include on how we can help out neighborhoods and change them which is a big part of society today. Overall this class was great, thank you so much Professor Margaryan!
My experience in this class was great and interesting it would of been more interesting actually learning the materials in person. But overall I learned many different thing that I haven’t even thought of. A topic I was most interested in was the economic inequality and when I watched Richard Wilkinson TED talk which really made me have a different perspective about how equality is part of a big portion of social statues. Another topic was Bentham’s panopticon was created within the center of towers for guards to be able to watch over prisoners without them knowing. In modern surveillance is the idea of cameras being used to guard over prisoners. Overall, it was a pleasure being able to learned from this class and great so thank you Professor.
