As we are learning about the criminogenic (causing crime) characteristics of neighborhoods, it is important to think about how we can overcome disorganization and organize the communities, instead. Read about the project where artist Ariana Faye Allensworth aims at doing just this. Read: Ariana Faye Allensworth – Staying Power: A Participatory Storytelling Project
What else can we do to engage the members of impoverished communities to create social organization in neighborhoods? Look around The Laundromat Project, overall, for some other ideas.

I feel like in order to fully engage the members of impoverished communities to create social organization in neighborhoods is by making news reports about it. There should be a specific channel or something dedicated to helping out impoverished communities. I feel like it would really be a success by recruiting new community members to join if they are interested. There should also be a public social media page like snapchat or instagram for members to post/share their experiences and thoughts with others. A lot of people might see whats going on in their community and be willing to take part in it for a better cause. Especially, times around holidays or in the summer when there’s no school. That’s when people have time to really engage and show their community some interest. A really big tip would be to have social media influencers or celebrities helping out too. This would draw more attention.
I agree theses are great ideas by putting it on new reports it would expose those who didn’t even know about impoverishment communities at the same time show awareness to how communities can help out. There are many other organizations that can help acknowledge the problems and get better outcomes in taking action to address these concerns and create a better platform do others won’t feel like they’re alone with no help.
Hi Amy, I agree on that, when you make noise is when you get notice, bringing attention on social media and new channels to those communities would be for sure big help to make others aware of what’s going on in our poor communities. Organizing them and get them to get engage is for sure one step forward to fix the problems.
Hi Amy, I agree with you. I just notice you mentioned something about social media which I also mentioned and do think that can be a great help with spreading out info.
Hello Amy, I agree with you and I really like your idea of a channel dedicated to helping out impoverished communities. With a channel and the social media letting people know what is going on in impoverished places, people can help.
Social disorganization exists in the first instance when the structure and culture of a community are incapable of implementing and expressing the values of its residents. To engage the members of impoverished communities to create social organization in neighborhoods is by taking social action to arrange disrepute events. Social actions tactics are used for situations involving conflict interest and imbalance power this can be a tool to show awareness and draw attention. Another way to get people to work together is a community partnership and coalitions combine elements of social planning and locality development when people share common concerns. This can be a way to change community conditions by discussing as a whole to address them.
Hi Vanessa. I agree that “Another way to get people to work together is a community partnership and coalitions combine elements of social planning and locality development when people share common concerns.” This will bring the community together to share their thoughts on each others concerns and give helpful feedback. This sounds like a very efficient way to solve a problem.
Hi Vanessa, absolutely correct! we have to first respect and acknowledge the values and interests of the communities, we can’t just try to impose something on them to try to help them.
Hello Vanessa, I agree with you and your idea of a community partnership. Using this, people can share their ideas and work together to make real.
In order to fully engage any community we have to offer realistic alternatives to their problems, usually politicians and representatives fall in the same empty promises that they are going to help impoverish communities but they never to anything about it. Last year community fridges started to emerge across the country as a way to fight back against hunger in poor communities, those fridges offered another alternative to the communities and we saw how people in the communities really engaged and came together to maintain those fridges clean and full to offer food to whoever needs it. Another way to fully engage communities is to offer social programs for people to come together as a community, more playgrounds for kids, job training programs, mental health counseling, substance abuse clinics, etc. Art seems to be a great way to try to get people together, but we should also consider sports for young adults to keep them occupied in something healthy.
Hi Julio. More playgrounds for kids and mental health counseling sounds like a great idea. This will help bring communities together and hopefully make a difference for the better. Also, this will help the people in need a lot like the mental health patients, it would bring them together to learn how to cope with their problems.
Hi Julio, I agree with you that mental health counseling is a great way to help out the community as a lot of kids go through depression and face many obstacles alone.
Hey Julio,
I agree with your statement, always show love to the new generation of our society that our neighborhoods is good to live in. Always good to support each other and the community.
We can engage the members of impoverished communities to create social organization in the neighborhoods. We can create posters, have a group page/social media platform to help out impoverished communities. I think social media would be a great way because everyone is usually always on their phones and on their social media so at least if we post, we can spread the word out. Also having friends and families help out would be a great way because they can also tell their friends and people wouldn’t mind helping out the communities. We can volunteer in keeping the neighborhoods clean and recycling.
Yes I think these are great points especially exposing it on social media since everyone is up to date with being on the internet. This would actually spread those to be aware of a situation that can motivate others to help making it a domino affect.
Hey Boubacar,
I agree with your statement, social media nowadays is the number one to show others our point of view of our community. It spreads the news quick.
Organizing the Neighborhoods could be difficult because not everyone thinks the same about our environment. Some ways to organize the neighborhoods is by getting a get together and talk about what issues are bothering us. Not everyone will agree to that but at least some will join in. Always introduce yourself and show them around what’s near or show them what are good or bad spots to visit or don’t go near it. Start a team of any sports the neighborhoods play and see how far our neighborhood gets. Last thing, any social media anyone puts on their media, it could show others and grab their attention. Some might be like, oh where are you located? To show our neighborhood is great.
Hi Jesus, I agree with you in a neighborhood not everyone has the same interest, which sometimes makes it difficult to organize it.
I believe that people in communities should speak and create groups and meetings to talk about what they need in their communities to make it better. There should be a community center and most important, the people in impoverished communities have to talk and put their opinions in the table.
I strongly believe that we should have more community engagement as means to prevent future incarceration. For example street teams who engage the community in order to talk to at risk youth and to clean the neighborhoods are great examples of preventing crime before it happens. Also having a FRIENDLY police presence working towards the same street engagement would be amazing. This is how we build community and create paths that are less destructive.
In my opinion, this is a very good question and at the same time a bit complicated. Today we have seen what the world has gone through, we have seen how people have lost their empathy, as many people have stopped caring about many things one of them, even how the neighborhood in which they live looks like. Many people don’t care about issues like this and how can we organize a neighborhood when their own people don’t care because they have lost faith in it. In order to organize a neighborhood, you need to find people who still care about their Neighborhoods and who are willing to fight for its improvement.
