Making my community safer is a big responsibility but if I could I would add more straight light ( Farrington, 2012 ). I would also like to add an alarm system because in my community there is always someone trying to break into cars or steal packages. Having a neighborhood watch party to help catch the members who commit crimes. We can’t forget to add cameras out to blind spots to gain access to all areas.
Hi fareeza,I feel like a big help to stop crimes in your neighborhood is a patrol watch. We have one in my neighborhood in which crimes like theft would happen a lot , but ever since the observe my neighborhood everything has stopped.
Alarm systems are prone to failures a lot, its always good to do maintenance on your system.
I agree is a big responsibility and having a watch could improve lower crimes, and definitely on the stealing packages and cars too much is going on in the world today better cameras and support.
Ive heard in the news that alarm systems with cameras are prone to get hacked into. I agree it can add some security but there is also a huge risk of your household being preyed upon due to hackers accessing your feed.
Hi Fareeza, I like your ideas for your community. I do know that some communities have a neighborhood watch group that works with the police department.
Hello Fareeza, I do agree that having an alarm system if someone tries to break into cars or steal packages. Having a package stolen and becoming clueless on what happened can be disappointing, but adding an alarm system can lower the rate of having the package stolen.
HI Fareeza, I think that these are very good ideas that would definitely make the neighborhood safer. I think i could be inspired from some of these ideas.
Yes, I can think of a couple of ways I can improve my neighborhood with CPTED techniques. One way that would prevent a lot of breaking and entering is using a buzzer or code to get into the respective homes or apartments that way nobody can easily just come inside and if they do they’d trip an alarm once something is broken. Utilizing cameras and flushing out blinds spots is another great example of CPTED techniques, so when you can’t gain access to all areas around your house or neighborhood and need to check little cameras that no one can see should help. Also if you catch a crime on camera that isn’t target towards you, but towards someone you know your cameras may provide useful when trying to identify the target.
Hi Ejiro, how are you? it’s great to see that you care about the community .And I really like how you include the buzzer or code . Thank you for sharing great respond .
Agreed! Surveillance camera is so helpful and can even help for evidence.
A buzzer is actually a very good idea.
The buzzer and cameras in blind spots are a great idea.
Hello Ejiro, I like the fact that you pointed out that using someone else cameras as your evidence to identify the perpetrator is a big help to the neighborhood. Also, I live in an apartment building, and I don’t buzz anyone in unless I am expecting a guess.
Hey Ejiro, the buzzer/code idea is great and it should be implemented on older apartments I’ve noticed more new apartments have this feature including a camera so who ever is buzzing can be seen.
I can think of a solution to improve the building I live in secure. There is no safety in the unit, and a lot of outsiders and homeless people enter and exit the building and stay.
There are no locks or an alarm on the front door. Just easily crossable fences, however I believe that an electrified fence can be utilized as a barrier to discourage individuals. This allows those who enter to do so through the door while keeping outsiders out.
Hi Lesly, electrified fences are a good way to improve the safety of housing property. Good point.
Hello Lesly, I agree that electrified fences are a good thing to have. It can stop people from actually climbing over them and lets people stay out of the area unless you live there and own a key to enter the building.
Hi Lesly, i never thought about that idea before so thank you for bringing it to my attention. I think that’s a great idea that can definitely keep intruders out.
To improve the safety in my neighborhood is to have security cameras in almost every corner and blind spot, also the best thing to do is to know your own neighbors, make sure you associate with them a lot more just in case anything happens you can also rely on your neighbors.
Hi Heriberto,
I like how you mentioned building good relations with neighbors because they can notify you when something happens etc.
To improve your house/neighborhood, we can start whit improving the lighting in your house and on your property. This will help deter criminals and make it easier to see if someone is lurking around. Keep your property well-maintained. This will make it less attractive to criminals and send the message that you take pride in your home. Get to know your neighbors and keep an eye out for suspicious activity. This will help create a sense of community and make it more difficult for criminals to operate undetected. If you have a garage, make sure to keep it always locked. This will prevent criminals from using it as a hiding spot or gaining access to your home. Make sure all your doors and windows are securely locked. This is one of the most basic but important security measures you can take. Consider installing a security system. This will deter criminals and provide you with peace of mind.
To keep your garage locked at all times is ideal but unfortunately, sometimes people forget which is why I think having an automatic lock system is good.
that was a big key all windows and doors were locked sometimes the biggest mistake we make can be so simple.
I agree with keeping garage doors locked. There is many opportunities for this to be automatic but during late nights and tired days people tend to forget. Also windows being locked as well as all doors and all other entries to your house or vehicle is a big safety tip.
I believe my neighborhood can be safer by fixing old abandoned buildings, more cameras and lights to improve a sense of security for citizens.
To add more safer and security to my community would be to get more lighting in the streets. Not only would this possibly lessen the chances of a crime to occur it gives you easily accessibility to identifying the perpetrator. I do agree with two locks, my door currently had a count of 3 locks a chain and door lock and a deadbolt. I believe modifying the count of each door lock and providing more than one gives the residence more security and safety. I also agree with blind corners. Many people can hide in these places where it makes you an easy target. Focusing on in proving these blindspots and decreasing them can help save lives.
To improve the safety in my neighborhood, we can install camera intercoms to buildings and adding cameras to blind spots.
To improve my house and neighborhood the lighting so if walking home late stay in the light, drive home drop your keys light for good for seeing your surround, and if someone else is outside good for them to see what you didn’t catch. I think a more secure lock deadbolt would be beneficial to some of the doors n my area and this will help stop intruders. Better cameras in your area, it is better if you’ve gotten familiar with your neighborhood so people can know you or get to know you so if anything is wrong you can ” yeah I know her she lives down block or something” friendship makes the world safe. An example of CPTED techniques, get rid of the shrubs, bushes, and trees that shouldn’t block your windows. If you want a tree of something blocking your window so no intruders will hide or come in you should invest in the pyracantha it has about an inch and a half thorn on it, let’s just say an intruder will know better.
I agree lighting is a must. Especially at night for women and children who work at night. Lately crime against women has been at an all time high.

I accidentally put this as a comment !!
I can think of several ways to improve my neighborhood through CPTED. Install working Security cameras that capture every movement in the area. Have more police patrolling the area or sitting the car with the lights on so people would know. For people that have a car I would suggest installing a GPS tracker on your car and to double check your doors to make sure they are locked. For big apartment complexes I would recommend hiring security officers.
I notice that when apartment complexes have security officers or a door man, it makes me feel a lot safer because there is someone who is monitoring the building and keeping watch who comes in and out
I agree with you Mark. I think having security cameras is necessary to try and keep your home safe because you can observe who is at your door. I also think those cameras that are compatible to use with your phone are good because you can look through them even when not at home.
I agree having more police patrol the area will help keep your neighborhood safe.
For the building im in, it has good things that are already improved in my neighborhood, a metal door with 2 glass panels that sees the lobby, 3 cameras inside and one outside, the only thing that needs to improve in my neighborhood is a camera being installed behind the building, which is the alleyway. It has good lighting but not a camera to view the blindspot.
Having cameras is important in case of emergencies and it’s always good to have a record of everything
I feel that having the cameras outside your building is great, but the blind spots could cause an issue if a criminal were to find out about it.
After watching the video and learning what CPTED is, my home has many of the CPTED criteria. For example, there is a camera that is installed underneath the balconies of my apartment complex. There is a fence outside which is very helpful you are aware when someone enters the inside the front yard. One thing that could be improved is having lighting especially during the night time.
I love what you wrote here having the fence is excellent for keeping people out. Also, I love the balcony cameras I never heard of a building having those.
After watching the video, I feel there are many things that my family and I have done to make our home safer. With the advances in technology, we have installed motion-sensored lighting that also activates a camera for our backyard. In the front of our house, we have a big two-way mirror door that allows us to see who is there before opening the door and a ring camera. There is also plenty of lighting around our house. Our area also has very bright street lighting, which makes walking home at night much more manageable.
Hey Michael, motion-sensor lighting is a great way to be alerted not only does it make it easier for you to see who’s outside of your home but it would also discourage a person with any bad intentions since they’ll feel more visible. Even if you have good lighting around your house there could be potential bling spots so a motion-sensor light would catch anyone off guard.
I totally agree cameras and lighting will help keep my neighborhood safe.
Some ways I can think of improving my home using CTPED ideas is by using better lightning on blind spots around my home. Also by keeping the front and back porch lights on. Another idea would be installing a higher fence around my home. Lastly by keeping my windows visible by not planting any high plants or bushes in front of them.
Some ways that i could improve my home using CTPED ideas is to add extra locks. This can be safer because it will make it harder for anyone to break in. Another way i can improve my home would be to add the lights so that i can see better if anyone comes near my home at night. One last thing i’d add is a camera so i can see if any weird suspicious activity happened near my home like stealing packages, etc.
while my current community is generally safe because I am currently in Orlando and a majority of houses have cameras installed. My old neighborhood in Queens had issues that I could use CTPED ideas to improve such as my apartment having a two-door entrance, the first door can open without a key and the second door you would need a key to open the door. I would add extra lighting at the outside entrance of the first door since coming in and out would make it easier to see anyone on the outside. My apartment was very close to those LinkNYC machines which would always be occupied by homeless or drunk people, especially at night so having light on the outside would be crucial.
I can think of many ways to improve my neighborhood and make it safer, One would be surveillance. I believe having small, clear cameras is one of the safest tools. I would also use better lighting because criminals would try to avoid any areas that has a lot of light and can expose them.
