To be honest, I never paid attention to what Beyonce was saying or took my time to analyze the lyrics as I do for other songs, in fact, I’ve heard the beat multiple times but never listened to or saw the video. Now that I’ve heard the whole song and video before reading the article, the message and themes  Beyonce was expressing through the video that I caught were her being a black African American female who is empowered and independent women, she express she twirl on them haters meaning she proves her haters wrong she works hard to obtain her goals and proudly. When she states I slay for me she’s stating as a woman she can do anything and leave everyone talking. my initial thoughts were just a song talking about powerful women but that wasn’t the case. But after reading the article and rewatching and hearing the song again it had a mix of both political issues and her being an empowered African American.  When I say political issues, I’m talking about how racism still exist nowadays and continues to affect people’s daily life, sadly we still see this all around the world and not only among African American but Asians, Mexicans, and Muslims. I liked how Matsouka portrayed these messages and themes in the music video of formation one image that was outstanding was her blackify the house where in films normal white people own a big home and have the power and position and Matsouka turned those images around. I also liked the fact that she included Beyonce’s daughter once again it showed empowered women. Beyonce uses positive emotion when she says “ I grind ‘till I own it “ empowering others to work hard for it and if you you will accomplish it. She also says “prove to me you got some coordination “meaning just like her you can accomplish your goals. I believe the song became controversial because like always the media wants to manipulate what’s truly going on in the world and that racism still exist.
