Summary

Beyonce’s song “Formation” has various themes and messages throughout the song and music video. Common themes displayed in the song are empowerment, social injustice, black identity and the importance of culture and rights. Beyonce uses music as an art to express herself and what is on her mind. Her music talks about inequality and unfair treatment that she and black people face. Her music is a way to make the wrong in the world be noticed and get talked about. The music video holds significant symbolism showing importance by making references to culture and history. From my point of view the sole purpose of the song from Beyonce is to motivate people to fight for what rights and be confident. Beyonce lyrics show strong emotive language in her lyrics. When Beyonce refers to her roots and family heritage which shows her pride in her roots. I believe the song and music video became controversial because Beyonce was speaking out and standing up whilst also encouraging people to do the same as well. The topics being talked about or the themes are very sensitive. Melina Matsoukas helps convey the vision Beyonce had for her song “Formation. Matsouka uses strong imagery to show police brutality and proud strong women.
