Summary
The dilemma I will be discussing is from the movie "Parasite" is the broader dilemma if it was right for the Kims to manipulate people in order to escape their impoverished conditions.
Chafee's Moral Positions and Analysis of the Outcome:
1) I would follow my conscience
Following my conscience, I would not think it wrong to manipulate the sensibilities of the rich Parks family who treat the Kims, and others like the Kims, as sub-human. However, the unfair displacement of other qualified workers for the Parks, via their manipulation, might be wrong enough to countervail the interest in essentially punishing these evil and snobby rich people.
2) I don’t know what I would do
I'm not sure what this position would entail at all, and what purpose this position even serves.
3) I would do whatever would improve my own situation
With this moral worldview, the Kims should feel very justified in all their actions.
4) I Would Do What God or the Scriptures Say Is Right
The Kims most definitely wouldn't have lied and manipulated the Parks.
5) I Would Do Whatever Made Me Happy
The Kims would do exactly what they did in the movie.
6) I would follow the advice of an authority figure
I'm not sure who, if anyone at all, did the Kims consider to be authority figures. I would assume they would just follow the group leader.
7) I would do what’s best for everyone
The Kims would have sought to work for a more compassionate and righteous employer, and would have sought to help others in their position to find jobs similar to theirs.
In most cases, I would typically favor doing that which God ordains morally just for me to do, but in this case, option 7, although not mutually exclusive from what God might require that we do, seems to be a more direct practical application of what it means to love your neighbor, and to constantly strive towards enhancing the well-being of everyone around you. And so, I would follow positions 4 and 7, since they essentially work together to prevent evil and promote the well-being of others. The reason I believe position 4 to be a necessary addition to position 7 is because we need that objective outlook on morality that position 7 does not provide us with. We need an objective definition of what would be "best" for everyone. Objectivity does not exist amongst secular definitions of "good" and "evil."
