Summary
The song "Formation" by Beyonce is about the pridefulness of being a Black Woman in America. The success she has although there has always been a racial tension in America. Her video brings a deeper analysis on her message. The police cars relaying police brutality , the continuous failing system of black people , the houses flooded. Everything has a message. This was my first time watching the video but i've listened to this song plenty of times and I had the same thoughts of it being a powerful anthem for Black Woman but I never knew the deeper meaning because I didn't ever watch the video that has so many messages. Matsoukas helped Beyonce relay her message in the video by finding work of inspiring Black woman like Maya Angelou and protests like Rodney Kings and Mardi Gras parades. to emphasize on "We are black people." The scenes of Hurricane Katrina disaster that happened in New Orleans Louisiana where her grandparents are from and throughout the song sitting on top of a police car correlates to police brutality. Two examples of language are Positive Emotive Language : The repetition of "Im a star.. I slay" this serves as a boost of confidence that uplifts woman empowerment. Another example of language is the use of Irony/Sarcasm when she says "You just might be a black Bill Gates" because Bill gates is not black he's white and successful but you could be successful and Black like Beyonce is. I feel like this song and video became controversial because it was taken from a political point of view. I feel like thats sometimes the problem with Society when a message on Injustice and power is put out people get so mad at the real truth.
