I have chosen the movie “Barbara,” which describes the story of a dedicated medical doctor. Barbara faces a painful moral dilemma that forces her to decide what she values with her changing perspective. In 1980s East Germany, Barbara is a Berlin doctor banished to a country medical clinic to apply for an exit visa. After filing an official request to obtain the necessary exit visa to leave East Germany, she is incarcerated and transferred to a small pediatric clinic in the countryside. Deeply unhappy with her reassignment and fearful of her co-workers as possible Stasi informants, Barbara stays distant, especially from Andre’s good-natured clinic head. Instead, Barbara snatches moments with her lover as she secretly prepares to defect one day. Despite her plans, Barbara learns a lot about her own life, which puts her desires and the people around her in a new light.
Suppose I were in a similar situation as Barbara and had the opportunity to choose between the seven Moral positions to apply to my problem to solve it. I would do whatever would improve my situation. I feel like Barbara should think adequately and attempt to improve her life at the new workplace she has been admitted to, where she’s experiencing trauma. In that case, I believe if she decides to solve it by doing what is best for her, probably afterward, she won’t face the same trauma she had been through, like being under the head doctor’s preaching.
