Week 13: Morality – Sofia Cabreja

I chose to watch the movie “Leave no trace”. A moral dilemma seen in the movie was when the main character Tom had to choose between continuing her life of living off the grid and in public parks/forests with her father or staying to live in the RV with the new community of people that she and her father had met.

The outcome of this moral dilemma could have ended differently depending on the moral positions that were used. If Tom would have used the 6th moral position, which is “I would follow the advice of an authority figure”, she would have gone with her father, since he was her authority figure and he would’ve most likely wanted her to come along. I believe that Tom chose to use the 3rd and 5th moral position, which are “I would do whatever to improve my own situation” and “I would do whatever made me happy”. In the movie it was clear that Tom became tired of living that lifestyle with her father and wanted living conditions that would be safer and more stable. She also seemed happier and actually enjoyed living in the community.

I personally would make the same decision that Tom made. I would have also chosen to stay with the community. Although it would’ve made me very sad to be separated from my father, I would choose to stay because it would be the best choice for me to be able to improve my situation and life. I based my decision on the moral value/principle that I need to do what is best for me and my future.
