Discussion Post #5

After watching the video “ TED TALK” “The Paradox of Choice.” by Barry Schwartz, I noticed that the author explained many interesting facts regarding how choosing perspective is linked to our freedom. He further explained how making a vast amount of choice makes us frustrated, less likely to choose, more likely to mess up, and less happy overall before giving us concrete strategies and tips to ease the burden of decision-making. He concluded his talk by arguing that making so many choices could negatively affect people.

“ With so many options to choose from, people find it very difficult to choose at all.” This sentence is the premise he uses to support his evidence. In Barry’s example, he mentioned one of his colleagues who got access to investment records from Vanguard, who realized that in the gigantic mutual fund company, of about a million employees and about 2,000 different workplaces. She found that the employer offered a participation rate. If you provide 50 funds —10 percent fewer employees participate than if you only offer five. Because with 50 funds to choose from, it was so hard to make a final decision.

I agree with Barry’s Schwartz idea that making so many choices could negatively affect people. Additionally, I can be related to this example and share my own story. I find it consistently hard to make a final decision when it comes to choosing in between which best-manufactured items to get. Because of the times at the marketplace, we find all types of stuff from different countries, but most items are made from china. However, I’m reluctant to get things made from china because I believe it won’t last long. And it confused me often.

The other article from CNBC, titled “From the “perfect.” salary to keep up with the Joneses, here’s how money affects your happiness” by Cory Stieg.

He explained in this article how important money is to happiness. He brings an essential answer to this question. However, he focused his conclusion on the point that money doesn’t guarantee our satisfaction. The premise to support him argues that having more money makes a huge difference in your life and overall well-being. I agree with the different ideas stated in this article. At some point, I believe the auteur is correct in some situations. Being a rich person doesn’t make a person delighted.
