The paradox of choice” on the Ted talk by Barry Schwartz is an important discussion that showcases the official dogma of all western industrial societies. The discussion by Schwartz is an argument because it portrays the two segments of an argument: the premise and the conclusion. Alex Ledsom’s article on the Forbes webpage titled “New Study Shows That More Money Buys More Happiness, Even For The Rich” is also an argument article that highlights the happiness that comes with having more money or being rich (Ledsom, 2021). This research article aims to discuss why both discussions are described as argument articles while considering the featured segments in the sources that conclude that both sources are argument-based.

Schwartz’s discussion is an argument because he commences by discussing the official dogma of all industrial societies. This discussion is an argument because Schwartz states the facts that are significant to maximizing the welfare of citizens. An argument statement consists of a conclusion statement and a premise statement. Maximizing the welfare of citizens is the conclusion of Shwartz’s discussion because he discusses how the welfare of citizens can be maximized. Schwartz states that maximizing individual freedom relates to maximizing people’s choices (Schwartz, 2007). These statements by Schwartz are the premise sentences because they discuss how the conclusion can be achieved.

Ledsom’s article contains the features of an argument statement. The conclusion statement of the article is “New Study Shows That More Money Buys More Happiness, Even For The Rich.” This is the conclusion statement because the rest of the sentences support the conclusion statement. Both discussions share the same concept because Schwartz discusses the increase in money as described by Ledsom in the sense that money maximizes people’s choices, thus increasing their choices and consequently increasing their welfare. Both discussions arrive at the discussion that choices increase the welfare of people.
