Our Unit 11 Assignment will apply students’ understanding of Management.
In the past, the only way to “move up” in an organization was from moving from an individual contributor – someone who was responsible for specific duties – to a people manager – someone whose main responsibilities include overseeing other employees. This made sense for many reasons: as employees became more proficient, they would be able to impart their knowledge to newer employees with less experience.
In many cases though, employees want to become more senior in an organization, meaning they have more influence and/or are paid more for their heightened expertise without having to take on people management responsibilities.
In a 1-2 page paper and in your own words:
- Describe the pros and cons of people management responsibilities.
Remember to cite your sources. - Identify at least one career path in which advancement should include people management responsibilities, and one in which career advancement should not include people management responsibilities.
Describe why each role fits into that category. - Share your own preference: would you like to be an individual contributor or a people manager? Why?
Think broadly about what to consider: your industry (or future industry), your family or home life and how those might influence your preferences, and your own skills and abilities.
In order to receive full credit for this assignment, please respond to all questions in this prompt.
Here are the steps students should take to complete and submit this assignment:
- Follow this guide to create a new post, and add in your assignment so that classmates can view and comment on your submission.
- Select “Ethics” as the Category. All submissions will populate under the Student Work menu item (Student Work > Management).
- Students should review others’ submissions and comment meaningfully (refer to this guide from MMSU for reference) to at least two other students. For reference, here is the difference between a comment and a post — you will be using both for this assignment.
