- The most demotivating part of Harper’s job is her having to taking on more work and not being appreciated for it. Not having a balanced work/life is never good but when your not being rewarded for working harder and going the extra mile it drains on you even more.
- If I was a HR manager trying to re-engage Harper I would first acknowledge the extra work and time she put in picking up for Jose’s departure. Since she works on a team of six so it is important to make each person feel like they are being rewarded for there contribution to the team.
- The downside of losing Harper is with the amount of work for the company she was doing covering in the absence Jose they would be at a great disadvantage. Having to fill two important team roles would be difficult and Harper should use this to her advantage to get a promotion or a new job.

The Founder
- The difference between the McDonald Brothers and Ray Kroc was business. Richard and Maurice McDonald did not have the same dreams of being big business men or turning the McDonalds restaurant into a global chain. They wanted to run one efficient and effective burger place they created with their own hands. Ray Kroc was a hustler and a businessman that was able to turn selling the brothers 8 milkshake machines into a 600 million dollar fortune at the time of his death. Essentially they both achieved there dreams with McDonald’s due to the success even though financially the advantage is clearly Ray Kroc.
- Yes I do believe the brothers did the right thing selling out to Ray Kroc in terms of allowing McDonald’s to be franchised across America. What the brothers did wrong in my opinion was the contract they drew up selling all rights over to Ray Kroc so they didn’t benefit from royalties or licensing fees. Ray Kroc did give them a fair deal at the time of the deal. The success of McDonald’s as a chain was done with the diligence Ray Kroc put in to ensure each restaurant served the same burger and fries and tasted exactly alike.
- The local store franchisees made money by selling the exact menu and recipe the Brothers provided. Ray Kroc funded the training and hiring of field consultants for each franchise meaning in the beginning each franchise and the brothers was making more then Ray.
- In the beginning stages Kroc made his money by franchising McDonald’s to his country club pals. It was different because Ray wasn’t hands on with running the store and faced the same issues the McDonald brothers did. The real money came when him and Harry Sonnenborn turned McDonald’s into a Real Estate Corporation leasing the land and the franchise undermining the brothers in the process.
- No this does not change my views of McDonald’s. What started out as a burger joint for families turned into a corporation and money hungry empire behind its leader Ray Kroc.
Spreading the love
Giving back to the community is something we all should do even if its the smallest contribution, but when a company is as successful as the ones we use in everyday life is we expect them to contribute to social change amongst other philanthropic efforts. A company that I interact with daily is Citadel.
As the office manager I am able to see first hand the amount of contributions the Owner and CEO Kenneth Griffin Jr makes to different foundations and projects that benefits people across the world. His contriubutions in terms of philanthropy and community service is second to none.
“The Citadel founder, who for years was Illinois’s richest man, has given more than $600 million to organizations in the Windy City since arriving in 1989 (Gordon)”. “The billionaire and his team approached Chicago organizations and asked about their most pressing needs, which informed the giving, Ahmed said. The 40 latest recipients represent “the fabric of Chicago,” he said, among them Northwestern Medicine, the Field Museum and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Gordon)”.
As a hedge fund the goals of Citadel are different than a non profit but the contributions they make from the money they generate are substantial to Chicago, New York, Florida and every area Citadel has a office including Australia and Hong Kong.
Contributions personally I would like to always see will always lean towards people of underprivileged and underdeveloped neighborhoods and public education. I think that would be the most beneficial to areas like this because it gives kids and the people hope and different avenues to take to become successful besides sports or entertainment. The disadvantages these neighborhoods have are devastating towards the growth of the community and will continue to be without help.
