Retention Assignment

  • What do you think is the most demotivating part of Harper’s job?

The most demotivating part of Harper’s job is that her new boss seems to be less aware of the workload and stress she is dealing with and does not seem to be available to help if Harper needs advice. This is becoming a problem for Harper because it is harder to have a balance between her work and personal life.

  • If you were an HR manager meeting with Harper’s supervisor, David, what advice would you give to help them re-engage Harper?

First and foremost, I will explain to David the importance of employee retention and the benefits of it. I will advise David, to establish clear expectations and objectives with Harper so she can have a crystal-clear understanding of her job duties. Also, it is important to acknowledge Harper’s additional work to help cover Jose’s responsibilities and how long will her additional help be needed. Additionally, I will insist David communicates with Harper to create a positive work-life balance and see what options there are available to help Harper manage the workload she has without interfering with her personal life. For example, adding 1-2 work-from-home days or a more flexible work schedule. Overall, Harper should know and feel her work is being acknowledged.

  • What would be the downside of losing Harper as an employee?

Harper has been an employee for roughly 4 years, she has experience in her role. Harper has been able to cover additional responsibilities for almost a year. That itself says a lot about the type of employee Harper is. Lossing her as an employee would be a downside, it will decrease productivity and produce an employee gap. It seems that it has already been difficult to manage productivity after losing Jose, losing Harper will just create a stressful environment for the other employees.

The Founder Assignment

What makes Ray Kroc and the brothers different from each other?

Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers are very different. Ray Kroc had a hunger for ambition. That hunger impacted his moral compass and business approach. The McDonald, brothers had a focus on doing the “right thing”. It is obvious that the McDonald brother had clear values and love everything about the sole proprietorship business they created. This meant caring for their food, employees, customers, etc. While Ray Kroc only cared about making more revenue, more profit, self-benefit, etc. This meant stepping over anyone or anything to strive for his goal.  Ray Kroc had a different approach toward the McDonald’s restaurant, he transformed the business into a franchiser and corporation.

Do you think the McDonald’s brothers did the right thing by selling out to Ray Kroc? Did Ray Kroc give the brothers a good deal?

I do not think the McDonald brothers did the right thing by selling out McDonald’s. In my opinion, they did not obtain the proper legal advice on how to approach the situation they faced. Although it looked like everything was placed in Ray’s favor, the McDonald brother had everything to prove that it was their original idea and business. There was a lawsuit that could have been pursued or at least a better agreement. Ray did not give the McDonald brothers a good deal, he was very greedy. The fact that an agreement was made over words and a handshake is insane “if it is not written on paper, then it does not exist”.

How did the local store franchisees make money?

The Local franchisees made money over a business that was already established. They were given the structure of the business, training, recipes, blueprints, name, and brand well know.

How did Kroc make money? How was that different than the franchisees, running the local stores?

Knoc started making money by selling franchise rights to entrepreneurs and receiving a percentage of the profit per location. Knoc failed to make enough money from this approach. He then switches to owning the land where McDonald’s Restaurants were built. Thus, increasing Knoc’s income by a whole lot. This allowed him to make money through rental income. Leasing, and real estate assets. Eventually, Knoc brought McDonald off the brother making him the sole owner and owner of all the stocks and shares.

Does this film change your view of McDonald’s?

This film changed my view of McDonald’s. It was distraught to see how Knoc underestimated the hard work and originality of the McDonald’s brothers. This brings to my attention the risks of franchising and the dangers of greed and ambition.

Business 100 – Ethics Writing Assignment

While reading the assignment, the company that came to my mind was Target. Target has a storewide of products from clothes, school/office supplies, kitchen products, groceries, produce, furniture beauty supplies, etc. You can easily drive or walk to a target. Target is located almost anywhere in the U.S. I can easily order online any product I need now; target offers same-day delivery, scheduled delivery, or pick-up options.

Target is a general merchandise retailer with stores in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Target’s tagline is “Expect More, Pay Less”. However, there can be some controversies. The company’s policies regarding environmental sustainability, supply chain transparency, and employee rights can have some interesting findings and can be a topic of discussion. I will go over the steps toward sustainability and employee relations.

Target works to bring solutions that better serve the community and environment from their inclusive and sustainable product assortments and the increasing renewal energy footprint in their operations, social justice commitments, and philanthropic support. Target also has inadequate hiring practices which is one of the most common challenges encountered in the industry. Facilities that do not have a formal hiring process and controls have a higher risk of using unethical practices.

Target enforces the policy that no candidate can be hired until approved by Human Resources. During the responsible audit, personnel records are reviewed. Throughout the process, verification of established formal procedures ensuring reviews of age documentation, vetting of labor brokers, and safeguarding of high-risk candidates are undertaken. Additionally, Target closely monitors and collaborates with NGOs and other brands to identify and mitigate forced labor. Prioritizing the well-being of workers, according to the 2022 California Transparency in Supply Chains Act disclosure. Target explicitly articulates a zero-tolerance policy for underage labor. Target partners with Better Work and GoodWave which addresses underage labor and remediate cases of underage labor when found in the apparel and rug industries, respectively.

In all, the supply chain labor and human rights policies cover hiring practices, forced labor, underage labor, migrant labor, discipline, discrimination, working hours and time off, payment wages, grievance mechanisms, and training governance programs.

According to glassdoor, target employees’ reviews confirm that the wage is good, and the working environment is great too. “Genuinely want to see you grow and succeed in your career at Target. However, some state that Target had “poor management” creating more work and longer hours. Most employees identify the lack of management as a big con, not being able to get the appropriate training develops controversy between managers, leaders, and staff.

Overall, I feel that to become a more socially responsible and sustainable business, the company must focus on developing better management, and increasing training meetings for leaders, and managers supervisors. Implement bi-weekly meetings with staff to encourage and congratulate outstanding employees. The application of the general ethical principle will give Target a more sustainable business.
