Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you choose this issue to advocate for?

Our children are constantly being cheated out of fair education due to skewed assessments as well as unrealistic expectations. We place too much emphasis on meeting goals in a timely manner that we forget that we are dealing with children that are suffering more than they’re assisted. IEP’s aren’t the end all be all but they are implemented correctly, children greatly benefit from the catered learning programs.

Why is this issue personally meaningful to you?

I am grateful that I was able to get many patient and understanding teachers in my early childhood. I thank them for the success that I have accumulated over the years due to how much they were able to teach me; One of those lessons being that learning is supposed to make the student feel challenged, not helpless. Too many parents I know, some with neurodivergent children, are struggling to this day with trying to accommodate their child’s learning habits with none of them having the proper training. Teachers casually enter failing grades into grade books with no help on their part and simply tell the parent the child is doing poorly. Fixing this issue will make teachers more responsible for actually educating the children instead of meeting the districts quota for passing an failing students. It can also grant both parents and teachers alike insight on how to help the child.

How does this topic impact you as an early childhood educator?

This impacts me as an early childhood educator because I will be entering the field with parents and teachers that potentially have issues regarding how children are taught. The issue affects how effectively I can teach students and educate the parents on any situations happening in the classroom. If I’m trained properly to look out for my students and any problems they may have, not only does it make it easier to correctly teach them, but the child also benefits from actually being able to learn.
