This was by far my favorite lecture yet. I was amazed by Rothko’s meditative approach to painting. I love hearing about conceptual art because this is what seems to escape most people but can also be a catalyst for change internally. I love how Ai Weiwei took a bold leap to deface a piece of art history. It furthered my appreciation that the next idea is always more important.
This lecture was one of the most and fun lectures to enjoy. Love looking at artworks from the 20th century. My favorites have to be Abstract Expressionism and Conceptual art because it expresses creativity and also reflects on society and the issues that are important to us. Especially Van Gogh’s Painting, for example. Looking at patterns can create shapes and change their form to interpret meaning. People express abstract art to express your emotions and feelings while painting to create your ideas. I love the Artwork Electric Superhighway U.S from Nam June Park. The lighting effects are stunning, and it explains about connectedness and interacting in other states. I feel like creating this work to show of internet connection that can access throughout the world.
What i found interesting about todays lecture was how pablo Picasso’s painting was used to represent the civil war and to show how people suffered. Also I learned how artist used abstract painting to express how they felt during ww2. As well as learning how jackson painting was inspired by surealism and expression of drama.
so far from this lecture i got to know about the superhighway which was really interesting for me, the pope art and the land art was fun I got to know about the civil war that represents the paintings.
This lecture was really interesting and informative I learned so many new things about civil war panting.
From this lecture I learned that there’s different ways of abstract paints like Orange by Mark Rothko. I would’ve not considered that an abstract painting.
It became clearer to me as to why art can be anything, a painting, an object or whatever someone may say is art. The 20th century was the era of a wider input which gave more artists greater freedom to express art in whatever way they chose to. Whether it was Picasso, Warhol, Lichtenstein or Nam June Paik, they were all different and made us appreciate art in its different form.
What I found interesting was the Electronic Superhighway by Nam June Paik. I was able to see Fin de Siecle II at the Whitney and ever since then, his work fascinates me. As they mention in the smart history video, his work is indicative of when it was made, and for an artist as innovative as Paik, I’d say his work is sort of a zeitgeist into the transitional period before the digital/internet age changed the world. I would like to know how his works, with their composition of dated technology, will continue to change in the pursuit of perseverance. The upkeep of this work reminds me of a thought experiment called “The Ship of Theseus”. It’s almost the same scenario, so at the point where all the screens and neon lights have been replaced, will it still be considered the original work of Paik or a new iteration?
One thing i found interesting/striking in this lecture was Jackson Pollock, Autumn Rhythm. This painting was just amazing and I felt it was a step to ask the question what is art, what makes certain paintings art. Especially with is painting you wouldn’t be able to know which was which way was up which i find amazing.
I liked the lecture a Lot. We got a chance to know about the newest art. I mean the 20th century. It’s really fun to know about those art. We learned about the pope art which is very interesting. One more thing I found out interesting is the abstract painting.
I found the lecture to be quite interesting I never knew there was such a thing called modern and contemporary art and how Contemporary art is basically the art of today’s society and is a global influence. And modern art is more re-imagining. The artwork I loved from this lecture is Roy Lichtenstein. Oh, Jeff… I love
you too… but… loved how it was the start the birth of the comic book.
