  • With the article “Arab and Other Middle Eastern Americans” we had to read this week, I learned why there were so many reasons on many citizens from the Middle East had immigrated. They had also suffered from the stereotypes that followed them, and they continue to suffer now. They had language barriers that caused them not to get jobs or even caused issues to communicate. They came from different faiths, which were already looked down upon in the United States. The culture is so different also made it harder for so many. Some do not understand that they followed stereotypes instead of looking at the actual person themselves. The people who come here are not able to live their religious freedom as much as others truly believe.
  • What I have noticed throughout my life is that people would much rather look at stereotypes instead of trying to get to know the person. They would listen to what the news says or what just about anyone else says but never really give the actual person a chance to speak about who they are or provide them with the opportunity to get away from the stereotypes. So many are victimized by the stereotypes from the Middle East when they have no link with them. People who continue to let those stereotypes continue to live are the same who need to go back to school and learn more about different cultures and backgrounds. Some people have issues with fasting, which is when someone does not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. This can be hard for some to do as the areas they may live in may not have the restaurants opened that late. But that even causes another stereotype, causing people to believe that they are starving themselves for religion when that is not the case.
  • One stereotype that I have come across many times is that people think that because someone is an Arab/ comes from the Middle East, they have a lower rate of literacy when this is not the case. For example, Jordan has the highest literacy rating. Other stereotypes cause people to believe that women cannot be educated when their rage is nearly 74 to 86 percent.
