“What is literacy?” based on my definition of the word, it would be the ability to read and comprehend what is read. Based on my research of the word literacy is defined mostly by the ability to read and write. Reading and writing can go hand in hand however, personally I would not lump the ability to write in with the ability to read.
John Trischitti defines literacy as the ability to read and understand but he goes further. He sees literacy as a life changing and impact idea. He sees books as the answer to many problems that affect children in the country. As he says “Literacy is the answer.” I agree with him to an extent. Proper education can solve many of the problems the world faces. Having access to books and having people who can make an impact in the lives of others is important aspect for improvement. For Trischitti he had a teacher who was able to guide him forward toward a better path through books and reading. I do not agree that literacy is THE way to solving issues with adolescents. Even for myself personally I did not have the best education growing up but I still sought to improve myself and although continuing my education and learning to be more literate, education and literacy was not the only thing in my life that needed to be attended to.

I like your take on why you disagree with Trischitti’s idea that the way to solving issues with adolescents is through literacy. I also agree to an extent. For one, the type of issues the adolescent is experiencing is the first stepping stone. Not all problems can be solved through literacy. I truly believe that literacy comes second to understanding a person through spirit first. How can you solve anything through literacy if you’re only viewing through shallow lenses? This ties into the relationship Trischitti had with an educator. Through my own experience. I have learned most from educators I like. Do you have any siblings? What was your childhood education like?

I like how you got straight to the point, well detailed, and explained in a brief paragraph! I agree with you when you said writing and reading can be differentiated, even though they go hand in hand. Another thing I want to point out is your opinion on Trischitti’s belief in literacy, I agree with you, I never looked at it from that perspective. Lots of us didn’t have the best education growing up and a majority of us were able to improve and accomplish goals, we need more than literacy to help complete our mission!
Hi Joshua, I like your take on this topic and how you approached it. I too believe literacy isn’t the only important thing needed in life for adolescents to succeed. For example children with developmental disabilities, they learn through play you don’t need to know how to read and write in order to play.
