Dear Adichie,
Hi, my name is Christopher Martinez and I’ve recently watched your Tedtalk “We Should All Be Feminists”. This email besides being an academic assignment which is why you or whoever is reading this is finding a good amount of the same formatted email. Is to talk about your argument concerning feminism and the points you made throughout your talk and how your talk really opened my eyes towards this issue in a new perspective . To get started I completely agree with your stance on the topic of feminism. As Gen Z as this sounds, I wholeheartedly support the feminist movement. I myself grew up around many women so I saw first hand how women in my life felt belittled by men and due to it being so common in my culture they wouldn’t bat an eye towards the behaviors of the men around them. While many people consider feminism to be an anti male movement I see it as an even playing field where both genders don’t have to play into any sort of roles that are assigned to us due to our sex. I believe we share the same meaning by your talk. What really stood out to me was when you mentioned in your talk “ …the boy would be expected always to pay, to prove his masculinity”. I myself whenever I go out with my partner I feel the need to cover the bill. Since I was always told it was the way things went that I had to pay no matter what. Even before in different circumstances when I used to go out with different people I always felt like I had to provide that sense of financial stability towards my partner and if i didnt i was not good enough and I wasn’t playing my part even if I didn’t have the means. I had always wondered why that was but thanks to your talk I had somewhat of an understanding of why that affected and made me look into other things in my life that could be attributed to being “a man”. Besides this, your other talk “ The Danger of A Single Story”. Was eye opening as well and I can clearly see the similarities between both these topics stemming from false expectations of each other and how it can affect us as people. in conclusion thank you very much for opening up my eyes to these issues and To whoever reads this, thank you for giving me your time.
Sincerely, Christopher Martinez
