HOW TO MAKE HARD CHOICES

The last hard choice I made was when I decided to move to New York City. The choice was hard to make because of all the unknowns involved in making the decision to move and when weighing the pros and cons the scales could easily be tipped in favor of staying or going. What made it more difficult were the negative reactions I got when mentioning the prospect of moving. Everyone threw “what if” scenarios at me, causing me to doubt my own instincts. I think if I were to have made a purely rational decision, I wouldn’t have moved, because the safer of the two options was staying. I think if we made decisions based solely on logic, we would always pick the safer option. In the end I made a gut decision. In this instance, when it came to making a hard choice, where either option could be a good choice, I took Ruth Chang’s suggestion, “to reflect on what you can put your agency behind, on what you can be for, and through hard choices, become that person”. There was really only ever one question to consider in the decision, “What do I want?” or “Who do I want to be?” I believe I am the architect of my own life and that anything I put my agency behind will ultimately workout and be the best choice.
