Summary

Ruth Chang's article "How to Make Hard Choices" argues that some of life's toughest decisions aren't simply a matter of weighing pros and cons. Instead, they involve fundamental conflicts between different values, priorities, or identities. Chang suggests that when faced with such choices, we should acknowledge the limitations of existing frameworks and embrace the freedom to create our own. By reframing the question and recognizing that every option has its own unique merits and drawbacks, we can cultivate a sense of agency and make a choice that reflects our personal values and aspirations. Chang contends that making a hard choice is not about discovering the "right" answer, but about taking responsibility for the path we choose to follow. I find this Ted talk very important and more readers should watch it!
