In the article misinformation and biases infect social media, both intentionally and unintentionally by Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia and Filippo Menczer, they explain how social media has became a false media and filled with information that isn’t true and will mislead the users. This article consists of 3 types of biases. For example the first bias would be bias in the brain. When people share a lot of different information about a certain topic our brain becomes overwhelmed to the point where we tend to misunderstand the important details and the actual importance of the topic. Even tho our brain can process a lot of information, too much of it can definitely cause mental distress. The second bias is, bias in society. This shows how the people we surround ourselves with can have an impact in what we believe and have the power of the amount of credibility we have towards what they speak about and the information they are putting out to us. The last bias is bias in the machine. Now this bias consists of bots that help the algorithm and makes sure people’s feeds are filtered to seeing one single perspective on something and are less likely to come across different perspectives on that topic. Fakery was created as a step to help develop the skill to pin point a fake news article, story, etc. This game allows the user decided if certain head lines are credible or not to them and if they are they press the “share” icon if not they press the “ fact check” icon. If they get it right they receive points and if it’s wrong they receive partial points.
Social media is definitely filtered with many false advertisements and ads that make it hard for users to actually come across credible information more often. After reading this article it made me more self aware of how I go on about believing most information on my feed. But I will definitely and have already started being more carful with believing everything on social media. For example with my experience on social media platforms I have definitely spread misinformation to my friends because I wasn’t well aware of the bots on these platforms. Playing fakery definitely has giving me a bit of insight on how to target fake news articles and I will definitely keep using it to better my skills.
