Misinformation on Social Media by Mariela Tsiropoulou.

In the article “Misinformation and Biases Infect Social Medial, Both Intentionally and Accidentally” by Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia and Filippo Menczer , (6/20/2018). The authors describe how uncontrolled access, the abundance of data, and the lack of regulation when publishing on the internet expose us to misinformation and untrue news. Studies have shown that three type of biases make social platforms more fragile. Bias in the brain, the cognitive to pay attention to all the stimuli in the environment is limited, that’s why a lot of information at the same time can divert people’s attention to believe wrong information. Also, many time people get affected emotional by the headline of a new and leads them to share without confirm the veracity of the new. Bias in the society, the information that an individual see on social media my be affected by the point of view of their social circle. People use social media to reaffirm what they want to believe. Researcher demonstrate what networks do is to grab the information, reduce it into small pieces that are easy for people to memorize and process, with witch people don’t need to do a lot rational effort to accept it and how with see in the social groups with whom they interact and are identify proceed to share away. Bias in the machine, it is how the systems behind social networks connects with the interest of people this algorithm is based on giving great emphasis to an idea of social validation. This generate waves of credibility in information that is often not true. These algorithms collect as much information as possible about a user and provide content that is tailored to their preference.

Many times I have been a victim of misinformation through social networks and this has happened to me because I have trusted the publication without first trying to see if the source was reliable. Now I’m more aware of the issue and I’m more caution when it comes to repost something.

I also play Fakey, so I have already read some news that see in the game and I click on see the source on the others.
