Conversation 2: Summary and Response,Vanessa Balbuena

“The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is about a young girl who was raised in Nigeria. Talks about her childhood. It talks about how she got influenced by reading British and American books. And how it affected her world view. When she grew up ,she began to notice how books or stories affected people. For example, As she was in America, her american roommate was stunned by how fluently Adichie spoke English. And her view on her African culture was quite poor and pitiful.Because stories about africans being poor, uneducated, and living in third world countries become stereotypical and become the norm. That’s what her roommate only heard about.Even when she traveled to Mexico, she had this stereotype of Mexico being immagrant. Being affected by the media. She was ashamed of thinking this way and thought the same thing her roommate did to her. In understanding that, she concluded it is importantto keep an open mind.

Response:Totallyyagree with Adichie’s point that single stories can be dangerous because they can lead to stereotyping and can be harmful to other people because they are based on one view.
