Conversation 4: What is feminism?

I view feminism as advocating for women’s rights and striving for equal opportunities compared to men. Personally, I consider myself a feminist, but I don’t engage in women’s rights advocacy daily. I think being a feminist involves a continuous commitment to combating discrimination, and it is a role that demands seriousness. For instance, Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist, and although I believed in his message and desired equality, I did not actively practice or discuss it frequently. I would describe myself as a supporter of feminism, someone who acknowledges their goals and advocates for change. In Adichie’s Ted Talk she said something that I found ver interesting “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller…”You can have ambition, but not too much.”(Adichie) This quote highlights how society pressures girls and women to downplay themselves. It emphasizes the need to challenge these restrictions, promote gender equality, and empower women to be ambitious and unapologetically themselves.
