To me feminism is an individual who is able to recognize an issue with roles of gender as they are and understand they must be fixed for the better. Many may assume due to the word feminism being related to females that the only people who can be feminists are woman. However being a person who is able to recognize an issue amongst the roles of gender in our society and aiming for a change to me deems enough to be a feminist. Adichie discusses how “Some people will say that a woman being subordinate to a man is our culture. But culture is constantly changing.” This helps open the discussion on how many may say that the roles of gender have been set in your culture and that they cannot be changed but change is real and it happens with everything there is always space to grow and evolve all that is needed is reflection and to identify the issues to be addressed. Adichie also states “…but if we start raising children differently, then in fifty years, in a hundred years, boys will no longer have the pressure of having to prove this masculinity.” This supports the fact that feminism is inclusive of addressing the issues with all gender roles by identifying the issues tied with masculinity and the role it plays on the male gender. Because in order to change the culture we must look at all points of view.
