To all incoming BMCC students,
As you embark on this new journey of your life, I first offer something that I’ve learned so far throughout my time in college: You’re right where you need to be at this moment in time. Community college might feel subpar when compared to four-year universities or other options; however, being here in this space will do well to prepare you for what’s to come in those other options. What I mean by that is jumping straight from high school to college can be very disorienting and create a lot of stress for new students. By going to a community college, you are able to give yourself time to slowly adjust to the college lifestyle and get to know yourself and the majors that you can choose from. Though community college can sound easy though, there are some very important things that you need to remember. The first would be to learn how to set up a system for your classwork that works best for you. Whether it be sectioning off days based on sections or doing everything in one sitting, every student learns and studies differently! The second is to get to know your professors. This goes for any school, any grade, but especially for the next two years. Getting to know your professors allows you to have a support system throughout your semesters. If you end up going through an unexpected situation or get overwhelmed with coursework, your professors are there to support you and, since you’ve gotten to know them better, they will know more in detail how best to help you. The last tip that I can give to you would be to take your time and breathe. Walking into an unknown space with a commitment to a major that you aren’t 100% certain about more often than not is scary and definitely a cause of anxiety. By spreading out the work assigned to you, reaching out to your advisors and professors, and, most importantly, taking your time with yourself, you can get through even the hardest of semesters.
