In the article “Snapchat wants you to post, its willing to pay millions” by Taylor Lorenz discusses the new feature of snapchat to help generate money. Snapchat created a feature called “spotlight,” like TikTok which would allow users to make short-form videos. Originally snapchat focused on being a messaging platform but with this new feature, users like influencers saw this as an opportunity to make money.

Influencer Cam Casey took advantage of this new feature and benefited from this. At the age of 19, Casey noticed a new feature introduced and uploaded a video he had previously made. Two weeks later he was informed that video made him one of the top performers on the app and he would make a lot of income. So far Casey has made $3 million dollars from his content on snapchat.

User Andrea Romo was 27 when she uploaded a video that would change her life. She was working as a merchandise associate earning 12.50, she uploaded a video of her sister deep frying a turkey on thanksgiving that would attract views and money. It was shocking to her that a single random video would make half a million dollars.

My experience on social media is little. Currently I only use Instagram to see cat or makeup videos. I do not have social media or use it because it is very addicting and time consuming. Although it has its benefits like becoming an influencer or creator and making a lot of money, it can easily come a toxic environment even if you do not have a big following. After reading the article I do not plan to change my social media activity since I do not use it all to begin with.
