When it comes to Adichie’s argument on the danger of a single story I completely agree. It’s something that for centuries has hurt people or has uplifted the wrong people. The idea that a single story is dangerous is extremely relevant, despite the numerous stories we have access to because of the internet. I cannot tell if the world has become so sadly ignorant because we know more of what happens in the world or if we are doing better because now we can do more when it comes to broadening our ideas on people. I can relate to the beginning of her speech where she speaks on how she grew up writing stories based on what she read. Growing up I never understood why the girls in my books or on TV would look so different from how I saw myself, to the point I even felt like there was something wrong with the way I looked. Another part of her speech I related to was when her roommate had assumed Adichie only listened to certain music or wore certain clothes. I’ve had my fair share of people expecting me to like certain things just because of the color of my skin. I believe Professor Barnes assigned this to show how within writing we can find ourselves not diving into the single story idea we may have of others.

I agree, with all this access to the internet people still decide to go on with what others misleading information instead of searching the truth or someone who knows about a certain topic. People have become ignorant specially the youth since they are very close minded easily influenced. Growing up I also saw many shows that were targeted for white audiences and I didn’t feel that I was represented. When someone that looked like was on the tv they were shown as a gang member or drug dealers. The girls were shown as rude and disrespectful. We were projected as bad people as were other ethnicities .I would just watch cartoons instead because at least it would be for everyone.
I one hundred percent agree with your statement, We all in our own way experienced a one sided story and been a part of a one sided story. Adichie just made me look at it from a different view. But I do try to be an understanding person towards everyone because everyone has their own story and it shapes us into our own character. Adicihie found her voice when she learned more about life than reading and learning from others. Sometimes, you can only understand something completely from our own ears, eyes and hands.
