SUMMARY AND RESPONSE

In the TED talk “Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the author tells us a life experience of hers, never be stereotyped to any culture or people by only a “ single story”. In this article, Adichie shows us a couple of funny examples, like her mother tells her neighbor very poor but does not tell her they also work hard, her classmate still defines the author’s life as tribal, and the author believes and desperate for ginger beer due to the character who comes from her reading book, drink ginger beer every day. Those stereotypes happen to our lives every day. We get information from TikTok and Youtube more than real news currently. Most of the time, we only watch what we want to watch, video makers usually film what the people are interested in. As time passes, we all become stereotypes easily.

Before I lived in America, I thought New York was an international city, it should be super fancy and neat everywhere. But after I came here, I found it’s not what I thought about, homeless are everywhere and garbage is on the road, danger happens every day, etc. I learned that what I read from books or watch from videos never can identify a person or a country. If the “single story” is what you only know about this person or the country, being respectful is the best way to do in the communication.
