TOP GUN

TOP GUN

One of the explicit, easy reboots. No surprises here.  Not sure I get it.  It was a fun film, but seemed achingly predictable.  Jennifer Connolly was a nice addition.

Although it holds no surprises, I believe that simplicity to the entire film is why it works. It’s an inherent part of blockbusters and that’s ok. In this case, this allowed the movie to be able to perfectly balance the big sweeping aerial sequences and the intimate dramatic moments in between. All of that really helps the movie surprisingly be a mature character study.

Mind you, as much as I am a big fan of Tom Cruise and Tony Scott, I do consider the original Top Gun to not being that high in regards to both their filmographies. So, I was especially surprised that I loved this as much as I did.

    1. We will have to respectfully disagree on the nature of a mature character study. It felt so paint by numbers in its plotting — with the exception of the Val Kilmer sequence — that there was little to no surprise and precious little nuance or development in the Cruise character.
