SBE Credit for Prior Learning

Earn college credit for your entrepreneurial experience.

🚀 Stay Ahead in Entrepreneurship! 🚀

BMCC offers Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) for experiences that involve the equivalent of college-level learning. Please review BMCC’s accepted CPL categories below. If you have completed something you do not see below, email cpl@bmcc.cuny.edu, so we can review it.

Students must provide documentation of their prior learning, which is then evaluated to determine its equivalency to BMCC course requirements. After assessment, the appropriate credits are awarded. CPL helps students save time and money by reducing the number of courses they need to complete.

Please note: Depending on your degree program and BMCC residency requirements, we cannot guarantee all CPL opportunities will be applicable.

What You Need to Organize:

To earn Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) in the Small Business Entrepreneurship/Innovation (SBE) program at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), you are required to submit a comprehensive portfolio showcasing your entrepreneurial work. This portfolio will be evaluated to determine its equivalency to BMCC course requirements.

Portfolio Requirements:

  1. Detailed Documentation: For each project, organization, or business you have created or been significantly involved in, provide a detailed account spanning 2-3 pages. Each account should include:

    • Project Overview: A clear description of the project’s objectives, target audience, and outcomes.
    • Your Role: An explanation of your specific responsibilities and contributions.
    • Challenges and Solutions: A discussion of any obstacles encountered and the strategies you employed to overcome them.
    • Outcomes and Impact: Quantitative and qualitative results demonstrating the project’s success and its impact on stakeholders.
  2. Supporting Evidence: Include relevant materials to substantiate your narrative, such as:

    • Links to Digital Content: Websites, social media profiles, online articles, or digital portfolios.
    • Visual Documentation: Photographs, videos, or screenshots showcasing your work.
    • Financial Documents: Business plans, financial statements, or funding proposals.
    • Marketing Materials: Brochures, flyers, advertisements, or press releases.
    • Testimonials or References: Letters or statements from clients, partners, or mentors attesting to your contributions and achievements.
  3. Alignment with SBE Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate how your experiences align with the SBE program’s objectives, such as:

    • Understanding the entrepreneurial process from idea generation to implementation.
    • Identifying, researching, and analyzing potential markets.
    • Understanding risk concepts and mitigation strategies.
    • Identifying and acquiring resources necessary for new ventures.

Submission Process:

  • Format: Compile your portfolio in a clear and organized manner, ensuring each section is well-labeled and all supporting evidence is appropriately referenced.
  • Review: Before submission, review your portfolio to ensure it comprehensively reflects your entrepreneurial journey and aligns with the SBE program’s learning outcomes.
  • Submission: Submit your completed portfolio to the degree coordinator by the specified deadline.

By meticulously preparing your portfolio with detailed narratives and supporting evidence, you enhance the likelihood of your prior entrepreneurial experiences being recognized for academic credit in the SBE program.
