Where I’m From

A Determined Light By: Andrea Malcolm

I am from a city with lights that never dims,

from big screen billboards and yellow taxis passing by.

I am from the small brown bricks housing community known as the projects.

I am from the cherry blossoms,

the London planetrees

I am from Culture Carribean Parade

and extremely Tall,

from Lorraine Malcolm

and Andrew Malcolm and Andrew II & Anthony Malcolm.

I am from the all-around words of encouragement.

And strong forces of love.

From never giving up in this lifetime

and never let anyone write your story for you.

I am from easter Sunday church services.

Wearing pastel colors, bow heads and hands together celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus

I'm from Brooklyn with Jamaican descent,

Flavorful 2-day marinated jerk chicken with hard dough bread and escovitch fish with bland mix of peppers, carrots, and onions in one.

From the first graduating High School student that did have detours in life without understanding the path of the world.

The first born in the family to achieve and head to college to pursue my dreams as a police officer. While completing my other goal as a cybersecurity analyst.

and the first to become a mother and understand the weight of responsibility. Understanding parenting an unconditional love from a little being, wanting to be the wonder woman that is always by his side.

I am from pictures on the wall that hanging as a reminder of my accomplishments that have yet more to be achieved.
