Hello Everyone, and Welcome to Class,
My name is Professor Clay, I am excited to learn more about all of you, and share techniques of effective Speech Communication and Development this Spring Semester.
Although, classes aren’t scheduled to begin until July 22, however, I am sure all of you have questions about the up-and-coming semester. I would like to take this opportunity to address how our course will be conducted, so that you can plan accordingly.
What to expect: During the course you will be asked to record your speeches to present to the class, participate in class topic discussions and short presentations. All coursework will be submitted online via our blackboard platform.
Attendance and Participation Requirements:
This is a 5 Week Express Course: In order to gain participation points, and get the most out of the course, be prepared to leave cameras on for the entire class.
The course will require you to participate in class sessions with cameras on for the entire class period. Because 70% of communication is nonverbal, leaving cameras off during class sessions erodes our communication process.
This class will require you to present speeches in class with cameras on, videotape and present speeches in class with cameras on, and leave your camera on at all times for class. There is a 15 min grace period in that time you may leave or take a short break.
A simple curtain or sheet & free zoom backgrounds are available for your discretion. This is a condition of the class and you are well informed. Please make a decision that having the camera on is something that is accomplishable for YOU for the semester.
To Prepare for the Course
1.Create a Youtube account (you already have one if you have a gmail)
2. Download a copy of the Syllabus and Textbook pdfs. (Read Chapter 1 in both)
3. Download Zoom onto your laptop or ipad to log in to classes
4. Make sure your camera is working
5. A stable Internet Connection is needed
6. Download a free copy of Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft & Powerpoint) from the BMCC College Website
-Please contact tech support if you need assistance in doing so
7. There are no assignments to submit prior to class
I do hope this provides more clarity as to what to expect for the Summer term.
Continue to stay safe and I look forward to seeing all of you on the first day of class.
Prof Clay
